Offer description

Framestore is a multi-Oscar, BAFTA, and Emmy award-winning creative studio that has fundamentally shaped the visual landscape of modern cinema. Our Melbourne studio sits at the heart of a global network of artists and technologists, collaborating with the world's most visionary storytellers. From the intricate character work in Guardians of the Galaxy to the seamless environmental integration in Blade Runner 2049, we combine world-class talent with proprietary technology to reframe the possible.

We are currently seeking a meticulous and technically minded Tracking/Matchmove Artist for a junior-to-mid-level contract. In this role, you are the crucial first link in the VFX pipeline. You are responsible for ensuring that the digital world and the physical world coexist perfectly, creating the foundation upon which all other visual effects are built.

Job Overview: Tracking/Matchmove Artist

Category Details

Company Framestore

Job Title Tracking/Matchmove Artist

Job Type 6–12 Month Contract (Junior/Mid-Level)

Work Model On-site or Hybrid

Location L4/476 St Kilda Road, Melbourne, VIC 3004

Salary Range $65,000 – $90,000 AUD (Based on experience and portfolio)

Core Software 3DEqualizer (3DE), Autodesk Maya, Linux, Nuke

Requirements Must have valid Australian Work Rights

The Role: Precision at the Foundation

As a Tracking/Matchmove Artist, your primary mission is to extract the movement from a live-action "plate" and replicate it within a 3D environment. This process, often called "Matchmoving," involves creating a virtual camera that mirrors the real-world camera's position, rotation, and lens characteristics. Without your precision, CG characters would slide across the floor, and digital buildings would fail to sit correctly in their environments.

* Camera & Object Tracking: Create high-precision motion files, including camera tracks and moving object tracks, that perfectly match the original background plate photography.
* Geometric Reconstruction: Build low-resolution geometry of the static surroundings seen in the plate. This allows for accurate spatial reconstruction and ensures CG elements can interact with, or be occluded by, real-world objects.
* Quality Control (QC): Reconstruct the placement of motion files in a 3D set and render wireframe overlays. These "playblasts" are composited over the original footage to verify the accuracy of the track before it moves downstream to Animation or Lighting.
* Interdepartmental Collaboration: Communicate effectively with the Layout, Animation, and Compositing departments to ensure that the data you provide meets the technical requirements of the specific shot or sequence.
* Lens Calibration: Utilize your understanding of photography to account for lens distortion and focal length changes, ensuring the virtual lens matches the physical glass used on set.
* Workflow Efficiency: Work within Framestore's Linux-based environment to manage assets and deliver shots on schedule, maintaining the highest levels of quality under production pressure.

Requirements & Qualifications

We are looking for an artist who possesses a "detective's eye" for detail and a strong grasp of 3D space.

* Education: A Degree or Diploma in Computer Graphics, Animation, Film, or a related technical field.
* Foundational Knowledge: A strong understanding of the basic principles of computer graphics, specifically coordinate systems and 3D space.
* Software Proficiency: Basic to intermediate knowledge of 3DEqualizer (3DE) and Autodesk Maya.
* OS Environment: Familiarity with Linux, as it is the backbone of our film production pipeline.
* Visual Literacy: A good understanding of photography, including how different lenses affect perspective and depth of field.
* Team Synergy: Excellent communication skills and the ability to take creative and technical direction from the Tracking Lead and Production team.
* Technical Scripting: Proficiency in Python or Mel scripting to help automate repetitive tracking tasks.
* Compositing: Basic knowledge of Nuke for checking tracks and creating QC renders.
* Problem Solving: The ability to troubleshoot difficult shots where tracking markers may be obscured or lighting is challenging.

Our Commitment to Diversity & Representation

At Framestore, we believe our work is only as good as the diversity of the people who create it. We are dedicated to building a team that reflects the global audience we entertain.

Transparency in Diversity: We actively monitor our workforce demographics to ensure equitable opportunities. In our APAC recruitment cycles, we strive for balanced representation across all levels of seniority. Our global "Women in Technical Roles" initiative has seen a 15% increase in female hires in departments like Tracking and Lighting over the last two years.

Furthermore, we are committed to a human-centric recruitment process. We do not use AI to screen or filter candidates. Every demo reel is reviewed by an experienced artist or recruiter. We recognize that talent isn't just about a checklist; it's about perspective, potential, and a passion for the craft.

Life at the Melbourne Studio

Our Melbourne studio is designed to be an inclusive, inspiring home for artists. Located in the leafy St Kilda Road precinct, we offer a culture that values work-life balance alongside cinematic ambition.

* Inclusive Workplace: Our facility is fully accessible with step-free entry and accessible toilets. We provide "Quiet Spaces" for neurodivergent employees or anyone needing a moment of focus.
* Hybrid Flexibility: While we value the collaboration of the studio, we offer hybrid work options to help you manage your personal and professional life.
* Professional Growth: We provide constant learning opportunities, including "brown bag" lunch-and-learn sessions, technical workshops, and access to senior mentors.
* Wellbeing & Community: From gaming clubs and film screenings to our Employee Assistance Program (EAP), we ensure our team is supported both creatively and mentally.

Application Process

To apply, please complete our online application form or email your resume and a link to your demo reel to recruiters@framestore.com.

Portfolio Advice: We specifically look for "breakdown" shots in your reel. Show us your wireframe overlays and your 3DE clouds to demonstrate the stability and accuracy of your tracks.

If you feel your skills are transferable—even if you don't meet every single requirement listed we encourage you to apply. We are looking for the next generation of VFX talent.
