Primary objective
The Principal Aboriginal Health and Engagement Officer plays a key role in leading strategic reforms, monitoring and reporting against
Performance, and ensuring that Aboriginal health initiatives are evidence-based, culturally secure, and responsive to regional and
community health needs.

Context statement
The position reports to the Director, Aboriginal Health and Engagement and is responsible for driving systemic improvements in
Aboriginal health through community-led engagement programs and policies, strategic investment, and assists with workforce
development initiatives. Operating across the agency’s 5 regions, the division ensures Aboriginal health engagement shapes health
policies, funding models, and service delivery.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide high-level oversight and timely advice of the development and monitoring of Northern Territory (NT) wide Aboriginal

health policies, programs and projects.
2. Design, implement and manage Programs and Projects to assist with the strategic objective of transferring services to community

control.
3. Prepare and review complex correspondence including ministerial briefings, memorandums of understanding, service

agreements.
4. Contribute to the development and maintenance of collaborative working relationships within the agency, NT and Australian

Government agencies and other jurisdictions in relation to Aboriginal health strategies and programs.
5. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken

to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
6. Manage a portfolio of community projects and stakeholder relationships in regions and remote areas.
7. Other duties as directed including workforce development initiatives and programs.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Proven ability to review and draft Aboriginal health programs, strategies, and reform initiatives that align with the NT Aboriginal

Health Plan 2021-2031, NT Cultural Security Framework 2016-2026, Closing the Gap and other relevant national strategies and
targets.

2. Demonstrated experience in building and maintaining partnerships with Aboriginal communities, health organisations, and
government agencies to influence policy and service delivery.

3. Expertise in developing, implementing, and evaluating evidence-based health strategies, projects, and that support Aboriginal
health service delivery.

4. Demonstrated experience in preparing high-quality reports, policy advice, and ministerial briefings, and represent government in
high-level negotiations and forums.

5. Deep understanding of the social, cultural, and historical factors affecting Aboriginal health, with a strong commitment to self-
determination and community-led decision-making.

Desirable
1. A contemporary knowledge of service delivery to Aboriginal Territorians.

The successful applicant will be required to obtain a current Working with Children Clearance Notice (Ochre Card). The position will
require travel in remote communities, on unsealed roads in 4WD vehicles and light aircraft, including overnight stays.
