️ Expression of Interest: Operational Technology (OT) Systems Engineer
Onshore – VIC, QLD, NSW, WA | ️ AGSVA Baseline (NV1 preferred)
Contract / Project-based | RFI-03152 Response (AEMO)
Azooa, a 100% Australian owned and operated digital consultancy, is assembling a specialist team to support the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) as part of our response to RFI-03152 .
We're seeking experienced Operational Technology (OT) Systems Engineers to support the secure transition of legacy OT environments to modern data centre infrastructure. This role focuses on enabling safe, compliant OT/IT integration that ensures operational continuity for critical infrastructure environments.
If you have hands-on experience with SCADA, RTUs, PLCs, and real-time industrial systems — and a passion for mission-critical engineering — this opportunity is for you.
️ Role Purpose
The OT Systems Engineer plays a vital part in delivering one of Australia’s most important energy transformation programs. Working alongside infrastructure architects, cyber security specialists, and OT domain experts, you will:
* Support discovery, migration, and integration of legacy OT systems
* Ensure alignment with cyber security frameworks like IEC 62443 and NIST SP 800-82
* Provide input into pre-migration planning, system validation, and post-migration operations
You will also assist with system hardening and boundary enforcement between OT and enterprise IT layers, contributing directly to the resilience and security of national energy systems .
️ Key Responsibilities
1. System Integration & Engineering
* Engineer and maintain legacy OT environments (SCADA, PLCs, RTUs, DCS)
* Configure and manage OT-specific platforms with real-time constraints
* Enable secure connectivity between OT environments and IT systems
* Analyse existing asset inventories and support system baselining activities
2. Infrastructure Migration Support
* Contribute to end-to-end planning for safe OT system migration
* Document dependencies and validate risk controls before cutover
* Execute pre- and post-migration testing for availability, safety, and compliance
* Support hypercare response activities and defect management
️ 3. Risk Management & Protocol Handling
* Identify risks associated with proprietary or legacy OT protocols
* Mitigate issues with segmentation, isolation, and fallback configurations
* Maintain protocol awareness: Modbus, DNP3, OPC-UA, BACnet, PROFINET, etc.
4. OT Security & Governance
* Apply security principles compliant with IEC 62443 and NIST SP 800-82
* Support the development of security models specific to OT environments
* Ensure physical and logical access controls align with SOCI compliance
* Contribute to the protection of critical infrastructure and ensure service resilience
5. Stakeholder Collaboration & Documentation
* Work closely with Infrastructure Architects, Cyber Security, Network Engineers, and AEMO stakeholders
* Maintain documentation:
* Asset registers
* Interdependency maps
* Data flows
* Change/migration logs
* Participate in engineering reviews and forums during transformation planning
Essential Skills & Experience
We’re seeking candidates who bring a strong mix of technical OT experience, security awareness, and project adaptability in critical environments.
️ OT Environment Knowledge
* Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA)
* Remote Terminal Units (RTUs)
* Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
* Distributed Control Systems (DCS)
️ Industrial Protocols
* Experience with:
* Modbus (serial/TCP)
* DNP3
* OPC-UA / OPC DA
* BACnet
* PROFINET
️ Domain Familiarity
* Real-time data handling and system uptime requirements
* Operational continuity principles during system migration
* Knowledge of control loop integrity and safety systems

* Integration experience across mixed-vendor environments
Qualifications & Certifications
Degree or diploma in one of the following disciplines:
* Electrical Engineering
* Control Systems Engineering
* Industrial Automation
* Mechatronics
* Computer Science (with OT emphasis)
Desirable Certifications:
* ISA/IEC 62443 Cybersecurity Fundamentals or Specialist tracks
* Vendor OT certification (e.g., Siemens S7, Schneider Unity Pro, Rockwell Studio 5000)
* CompTIA Security+ or equivalent with OT awareness
Desirable Attributes
️ Exposure to:
* Energy, utilities, or manufacturing sectors regulated under the SOCI Act
* Large government transformation programs involving critical systems
* Operational redundancy planning and physical security controls
️ Familiar with:
* Infrastructure and OT migration best practices
* Disaster recovery (DR), fallback testing, and rollback planning
* Documentation standards across regulated OT environments
