About Us: Karlka Nyiyaparli Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC (KNAC) is the Native Title representative group for the Nyiyaparli People, with approximately 400 current members. The Nyiyaparli People are the Traditional Owners of approximately 36,684 square kilometres of land and waters in the east Pilbara region. This area includes the Aboriginal communities of Jigalong and Parnpajinya, several pastoral leases, and significant mining operations. Locations within the Determination Area are places of particular significance to the Nyiyaparli People, including ceremonial sites, songlines, permanent pools, and natural resources. The Nyiyaparli Ranger Program is a key KNAC initiative that delivers cultural land management activities on-Country. The program is guided by the Nyiyaparli People & Country Plan and supports cultural knowledge transfer, biodiversity monitoring, land management, and heritage protection. Location: This position is offered in Newman or South Hedland KNAC strongly encourages applications from Nyiyaparli people. Position Purpose The Ranger Program Project Officer will work closely with the Ranger Program Manager and our Ranger Program staff team in the delivery of on-the-ground cultural land management activities in line with the Nyiyaparli People & Country Plan. These activities include cultural knowledge transfer projects with Senior Nyiyaparli such as our Kids on Country camps, healthy country surveys, prescribed burning, aquatic sampling/water monitoring, flora & fauna monitoring, feral cat management and weed management. The role will be multi-faceted and involve assisting with trip planning, logistics and on-the-ground project coordination, supporting the delivery of ranger training programs, ensuring maintenance and servicing of equipment, and compliance with risk management practices, internal policies, procedures and regulatory frameworks. The role will also see you assist with the coordination of a key new project under development. You will be part of great team and will work collaboratively with and communicate regularly with other program and KNAC staff as required. The role will require ongoing communication, consultation & follow-up with KNAC’s Cultural Advisor and Senior Nyiyaparli Traditional Owners in project planning and evaluation. You will be required to work closely with our project partners such as DBCA. The role will require your time to be split between office-based work and on country activities based on field season requirements. It will require regular travel and some time away from home. There is potential for this role to develop further as the ranger program continues to grow. Key Responsibilities Assist in the preparation and implementation of ranger work plans. Coordinate logistics and trip planning for on-Country activities and step into trip leadership when required. Support consultation on a key new project and assist with development of a project scope. Support the delivery of ranger training programs Assist with cultural land management activities including flora and fauna monitoring, fire management, weed management, Kids on Country camps, and aquatic sampling. Build productive relationships with partners such as DBCA, specialists/consultants, neighbouring tenure holders and the Pilbara Ranger Network. Conduct toolbox meetings, encourage safe practices and report WHS concerns. Assist with field data collection, collation, storage and analysis. Develop communication materials such as ranger manuals, workflows, newsletters, social media content and annual report contributions. Reconcile expenditure and assist with project reporting. Maintain KNAC vehicles, equipment and premises in good working order. Adhere to KNAC policies, procedures and cultural protocols. Qualifications & Experience Essential Working On Country Experience working on Country in remote locations in conservation and land management, community development or related fields Willingness to travel and comfortable with camping on Country for up to a week at a time. Experience in operating field equipment and an understanding of safe operating practices. Experience Working in a Cross-Cultural Environment Demonstrated ability to communicate in a culturally appropriate way with Aboriginal people and foster an environment of two-way learning. Demonstrated ability to operate calmly in a cross-cultural environment and to demonstrate understanding, respect and flexibility to cultural and social differences. Strong Organisational Skills Demonstrated time management skills, ability to forward plan and multi-task to achieve project goals in a busy and dynamic environment. Effective Communication Ability to communicate effectively and build productive relationships with a diverse range of people, including Traditional Owners, colleagues, industry partners and government agency stakeholders. Ability to work as part of a team and contribute to overall team goals and objectives. Workplace Health & Safety An understanding of safe operating practices in remote contexts and the ability to implement practical risk management strategies that adhere to KNAC’s Risk Management Policy. Leadership Ability to provide collaborative on-the-ground leadership and mentoring to the ranger team. Desirable Experience using GIS software (ArcGIS, Avenza Maps) or digital field data tools (e.g., Fulcrum). Experience in fire or weed management or fauna monitoring projects. Prerequisites Manual C Class Drivers Licence WA Working with Children’s Clearance (or willingness to obtain) National Police Clearance (or willingness to obtain) Competency in the use of computers and sound administrative skills Willingness to undertake job-specific training and professional development as required.
