About Newman Women's Shelter (NWS)
NWS is a not-for-profit community organisation delivering specialist Family & Domestic Violence services, youth services, crisis accommodation and outreach support across Newman and the East Pilbara region. We work alongside community to provide culturally safe, trauma‑informed support services for women, children and young people.
About the Role
We are seeking casual Youth Support workers to join our team, providing support across NWS youth services. This is a hands‑on role suited to someone who works well under pressure, is culturally responsive, and passionate about walking alongside young people and community.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide a safe, welcoming and supervised space for at‑risk young people
* Complete intake and risk assessments
* Develop initial safety plans and support connection to a responsible adult
* Provide practical support including meals, hygiene supplies, rest areas and low‑stimulus engagement activities
* Maintain trauma‑informed and culturally safe practice
* Complete accurate case notes and handovers
* Maintain a clean and safe facility
* Help coordinate regular activities, workshops and events
* Work alongside community and local stakeholders
* Build strong relationships with young people and families
* Support transport of young people
* Ensure staff and young people's safety protocols are followed
* Complete shift reports and handovers
* Support referral and follow‑up family engagement alongside NWS youth staff
* Participate in debriefs, supervision and service improvement processes
Safety & Professional Practice
* Apply risk management and safety protocols
* Operate within Children and Community Services Act requirements
* Maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality and ethical practice
About You
* Certificate 3 or higher in Youth Work, Community Services or related field (or willingness to obtain)
* Experience working with vulnerable or at‑risk young people
* Experience supporting young people with trauma‑related and complex behaviours
* Maintain calm and professional presence in high‑stress situations
* Maintain respectful boundaries with a strong understanding of trauma‑informed and culturally safe practice
* Confidence completing risk assessments and safety planning
* Ability to work night shifts, weekends and rotating rosters
* Strong communication, record‑keeping and relationship‑building skills
* Proficient in computer use and digital documentation
Desirable
* Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply
* Experience in night patrol, outreach or community services
* Knowledge of Martu community and East Pilbara context
* Experience working in Family and Domestic Violence services
Requirements
* Working With Children Check
* National Police Clearance
* Current C Class Driver's Licence
* Applicants must hold current Australian work rights
