Primary purpose of position
The Gardener is responsible for the maintenance of Port of Townsville Limited’s grounds and gardens and associated infrastructure in accordance with agreed standards, practices and procedures. The Gardener will at times supervise a small team of casual gardeners.
Position specific responsibilities
* Displaying an image of pride and care to the community in the presentation of port environs
* Establishing and improving work methods in the course of grounds maintenance and repair work
* Actively providing positive input into work outcomes
* Solving day to day job problems
* Weeding, mulching, fertilising, planting out and replacing as necessary and at correct time
* Pruning/hedging of all shrubs and trees at the appropriate time
* Watering of grass and garden areas
* Blower vacuuming of paths and entrances
* Applying pesticides, herbicides, insecticides or other chemicals to soil, weeds, plants or other surfaces as required
* Controlling litter and graffiti
* Creating new garden beds/planting areas as directed
* Maintaining a small holding nursery
* Providing recommendations on plant replacement
* Providing advice and proposals with ideas that will enhance the port environment
* Operating tractors, ancillary equipment and small plant items as required and ensure that they are efficiently and effectively utilized
* Mowing and renovating turfed areas using correct machinery techniques
* Using and calibrating spraying and fertilising equipment both mobile mounted and manually operated
* Ensuring preventative maintenance procedures are adhered to and carrying out regular servicing of all grounds and garden equipment
* Maintaining all plant in a sound mechanical condition and reporting any defects to the Contract Supervisor
* Undertaking general maintenance duties as directed by the Contract Supervisor
* Preparing materials lists
* Completing and returning inspection check sheets
* Completing records on plant utilization
* Complying with maintenance and service schedules
* Reporting schedule deficiencies
* Contribute to the Port’s strategic plans including the Statement of Corporate Intent, Corporate Plan and Port Vision 2050
* Ensure appropriate health and safety, environmental management, quality and information security practices are implemented for all works to comply with the Port’s policies and relevant legislation
* Comply with all relevant legislation, codes of practice and standards
* Promote a Zero Harm culture and continual improvement in our Health and Safety management and performance
* Any other duties commensurate with level and accountabilities, or as directed by leadership
Essential criteria
Mandatory requirements/qualifications/tickets/licences:
* Current C Class Driver Licence
* Operate a Gantry or Overhead Crane Ticket
* Construction Induction (White Card)
* Pre-employment Medical - Functional 20kg
Skills and experience:
* Possess a knowledge and understanding of the way in which to care for, manage and develop identified garden areas
* Demonstrated skills in managing time, setting priorities, planning and organising daily work
* Demonstrated supervisory experience combined with the ability to work within a team environment and undertake tasks without constant supervision
* Demonstrated skills in the use of tools, equipment and materials relevant to grounds and gardens maintenance
Software/Systems skills:
* General computer skills in Microsoft Office applications (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
* Possession of operator’s tickets that desirably includes forklift, skid steer loader or backhoe/loader
Highly desirable/ability to obtain criteria
Candidates will need to have, or have the ability to obtain the following qualifications/tickets/licences:
* Chainsaw Level 1 Course (required within 3 - 6 months)
* Chainsaw Level 2 Course (required within 3 - 6 months)
* Trim Trees using a Pole Saw (required within 3 - 6 months)
* Provide First Aid (required within 3 - 6 months)
* Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) (required within 3 - 6 months)
* Current Queensland MR class Driver Licence (required within 6 months)
* Maritime Security Identification Card (required within 3 months)
* Use Basic Equipment for Oil Spill Response (subject to AMSA/MSQ training schedule)
* Isolate and Access Plant (required within 3 months)
* Agricultural Chemical Distribution Control Licence (required within 3 - 6 months)
* VOC – Overhead bridging Crane Maintenance Workshop (required within 3 months)
* Working in Proximity to Traffic Awareness Part 1 (required within 3 months)
* Working in Proximity to Traffic Awareness Part 2 (required within 6 - 12 months)
* Working in Proximity to Traffic Awareness Part 2 (required within 6 - 12 months)
The following are not mandatory but are highly desirable:
* Certificate III in Horticulture
* Conduct Backhoe/Loader Operations Ticket
* Forklift Truck – LF High Risk Work Licence
