Role Overview
The Legal Counsel will provide strategic, commercial, and regulatory legal advice to the business across all aspects of automotive OEM operations. This role partners closely with the executive leadership team, cross-functional teams, and China headquarters to support product development, supply chain, sales, marketing, and aftersales activities while managing legal risk and ensuring compliance in a highly regulated environment.
Key Responsibilities Strategic & Commercial Legal Support
* Act as a trusted legal advisor to senior leadership and key business stakeholders.
* Provide pragmatic, business-focused legal advice aligned with corporate strategy.
* Support major strategic initiatives, including business transformation and market expansion.
Contracts & Transactions
* Review and negotiate complex commercial agreements, including:
* Supplier and manufacturing agreements.
* Dealer, distributor, and agency agreements.
* Technology, software, and data-sharing agreements.
* Joint ventures, partnerships, and strategic alliances.
* Lead or support critical corporate projects.
Regulatory & Compliance
* Advise on automotive-specific regulatory frameworks, including:
* Vehicle safety and compliance.
* Environmental and emissions regulations.
* Consumer law, franchise law, and product liability.
* Competition, antitrust, and dealer network regulations.
* Support compliance programs and internal policies across the organization.
Risk Management & Dispute Resolution
* Identify, assess, and mitigate legal and commercial risks.
* Manage disputes, litigation, and regulatory investigations.
* Oversee and coordinate external counsel where required.
Product & Technology
* Advise on legal aspects of vehicle development, connected cars, EVs, autonomous technologies, and software.
* Provide guidance on intellectual property, data privacy, cybersecurity, and AI-related legal issues.
Leadership & Collaboration
* Chief Risk and Compliance Officer.
* Represent BYD/Denza in high-level legal, regulatory, or political forums.
* Mentor and support junior legal team members.
* Collaborate with global and regional legal teams.
* Contribute to continuous improvement of legal processes and governance frameworks.
Essential Skills & Experience
* Qualified lawyer with a current practising certificate.
* 1-2 years post-qualification experience.
* Experience in automotive OEM, manufacturing, or complex regulated industries.
* Strong background in commercial contracts and regulatory law.
* Proven ability to work with senior executives and influence decision-making.
* Commercial mindset with the ability to balance risk and business objectives.
Desirable
* In-house experience within an automotive OEM or Tier 1 supplier.
* Exposure to EV, mobility, software, or connected vehicle technologies.
* Experience working in a global or matrix organisation.
* Prior people leadership or mentoring experience.
* Multilingual – English and Mandarin.
