This growing Australian renewable energy project company delivering solar PV, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and integrated renewable solutions across commercial, industrial, and utility-scale projects. They support projects from feasibility through construction, commissioning, and handover.
The General Manager - Operations is accountable for end-to-end operational delivery across Australia and New Zealand, with ownership of projects post-sale through mobilisation, delivery, commissioning, handover and ongoing operations and maintenance (O&M).
The role leads multi-disciplinary teams to deliver safe, high-quality outcomes for customers, drive operational excellence and continuous improvement, and ensure strong commercial performance through effective planning, governance, risk management and execution.
Key responsibilities and elements of the role include:
Own delivery performance for all contracted works post-sale, ensuring effective mobilisation, planning, resourcing and governance from project kick-off through commissioning, handover and into operations.
Lead and develop direct report functions including Project Managers, Engineering, Operations & Customer Success, and Warehouse to deliver consistent execution and customer outcomes across Australia and New Zealand.
Establish and maintain best-practice delivery frameworks (safety, quality, schedule, cost, risk and change control), ensuring contractual obligations and standards are met.
Own operational readiness and handover quality, ensuring complete documentation, training, spares strategy, monitoring setup, and clear pathways into O&M service delivery.
Drive operational efficiency and profitability through effective budgeting, forecasting, cost control, procurement/warehouse optimisation, and disciplined subcontractor management.
Provide clear performance reporting to the CEO and Board/leadership forums, using data and customer feedback to drive continuous improvement, risk reduction and scalable delivery across the portfolio.
Key tasks and outcomes in the role include:
Lead the end-to-end delivery pipeline post-sale, including kick-off, program planning, resource allocation, scheduling, and governance across concurrent projects.
Oversee engineering quality and technical assurance, ensuring designs, drawings, approvals and as-built documentation meet internal standards and contractual requirements.
Ensure commissioning, grid connection, and handover are completed to a defined 'ready for operations' standard, including training, spares, monitoring setup and customer acceptance.
Lead the Operations & Customer Success function to deliver proactive customer engagement, performance reporting, and responsive issue resolution post-handover.
Maintain strong financial control across delivery and operations, including budgets, cost-to-complete, variations, invoicing readiness, and subcontractor/supplier performance.
Define and track key operational KPIs (safety, quality, schedule, margin, customer satisfaction, uptime/availability) and implement corrective actions where performance is off track.
Strengthen governance for compliance, contracts, and documentation (including safety systems, quality management, and regulatory requirements) across Australia and New Zealand.
Drive continuous improvement through post-implementation reviews, lessons learned, and standardisation of tools, templates and processes to scale delivery capability.
Key Skills & Experience:
Senior leadership experience (GM/Head of Operations/COO) leading multi-site, multi-disciplinary teams across project delivery and service operations within renewables, electrical infrastructure, construction or asset-intensive environments.
Demonstrated accountability for commercial outcomes including P&L ownership, gross margin, cashflow, forecasting, and contract performance (projects and/or O&M/service agreements).
Proven ability to establish and run operating rhythms (KPIs/OKRs, dashboards, governance forums), drive accountability, and scale delivery capability across geographically distributed teams (Australia and New Zealand).
Strong understanding of solar PV project delivery and lifecycle asset management, including commissioning, handover, monitoring, maintenance strategies, warranty management, and relevant compliance obligations (safety, network and regulatory).
Highly developed planning and execution capability, with experience optimising resourcing, supply chain/warehousing, subcontractor performance, and operational readiness to meet schedule, cost, quality and customer outcomes.
Exceptional stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to partner with customers, financiers, suppliers, regulators and internal leaders to resolve issues and deliver sustainable outcomes.
Demonstrated ability to build high-performing teams, develop leaders, and embed a strong safety culture, quality discipline and continuous improvement mindset.
