We are delivering several Major programs whilst developing new products across our tactical and logistic product ranges. We have immediate vacancies available for experienced mechanical design engineers to be based at our MILVEHCOE (Military Vehicle Centre of Excellence) in Redbank, Brisbane.
About the Role
The Senior Design Engineer is responsible for the design of prototype and production level systems, subsystems and components for military vehicles over the product life cycle. The work will be carried out within a combination of matrix and cross functional project specific teams.
The duties of the Senior Design Engineer include:
* Application of mechanical engineering principles in the development of Welded Structural components;
* Assessment of residual stress, distortion control and fatigue design;
* Establish FEA requirements and assess, interpret and apply FEA results to design;
* Assess impacts of manufacturing on mechanical components;
* Conceive and select concepts in response to Customer Requirements using a range of tools and methods including weighted Trade Off Studies, DFMEA, Design for Safety, etc.;
* Evolve selected concepts into documented prototype designs using integrated CAD/PDM (CATIA V5, Siemens NX and Siemens TEAMCENTER);
* Support manufacture and verification of prototypes and incorporate test results into production designs as appropriate;
* Develop, release and maintain production documentation;
* Participate in formal and informal Design Reviews with internal and external stakeholders;
* Work with and assist suppliers in the production of Rheinmetall designed components and systems;
* Provide problem solving and continuous improvement support to Production and Through Life Support teams; and
* Fulfill other duties and responsibilities that may be required as determined with your manager from time to time.

The experience and skillset best suited to this role includes:
* Proven experience in the development of welded mechanical structures – Essential;
* Proven ability to read, understand and apply FEA results to designs – Essential;
* Proven experience in the management of fatigue, fracture and residual stress in the design and manufacture of welded structures – Essential;
* Proven experience in mechanical or aerospace engineering, ideally in the Defence sector;
* Tertiary qualifications ideally in Mechanical Engineering that is recognised by The Institute of Engineers Australia;
* Strong analytical skills with a focus on problem-solving;
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills and teamwork abilities; and
* Must hold or be eligible to obtain an Australian Government Security Clearance (must hold Australian Citizenship).
