The Role We are looking for a qualified Mechanical Engineering Project Engineer. Experience in the mining industry and strong project‑management skills are essential. The role reports to the Superintendent – Smelter Projects and provides project management and engineering support for capital projects in the Smelters portfolio. The senior engineer coordinates mechanical engineering teams to deliver projects through scoping, design, construction, commissioning and handover.
Your key responsibilities include:
Safe and successful delivery of capital, sustaining, and asset improvement projects, including shutdowns, ensuring quality, financial and technical alignment.
Lead and manage complex mechanical asset projects involving personnel from a variety of teams and professional disciplines.
Perform calculations for safe and efficient component designs and upgrades.
Undertake options planning and define the scope for asset improvements considering risk, operations and cost.
Supervise and manage design, tendering and delivery phases, ensuring reports, design plans and documentation are delivered timely, cost‑effective and comply with specifications, standards, budgets and the project management plan.
Manage external suppliers to ensure certification meets statutory requirements.
Ensure project delivery follows Glencore MIM processes, governance, risk management, stakeholder communication and reporting.
Build and maintain sustainable partnerships with stakeholders to prioritise work and smooth transition from execution to operation.
Coordinate site construction activities to ensure safety and mitigate production, environmental and infrastructure risks.
Provide visible leadership and ensure compliance with MIM policies, standards and procedures for the Engineering team.
Develop a positive team culture, mentoring and coaching to build employee competence.
The successful applicants will have:
5+ years of engineering and project delivery experience or maintenance engineering experience.
8+ years of mining or heavy industry experience.
Demonstrated ability to complete document‑control activities.
Understanding of materials handling processes, including SAP.
Excellent communication skills at all levels.
Experience supervising and developing large work teams.
Knowledge of budgeting processes.
Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
Experience generating engineering estimates and quotations.
Capital Project Management experience.
Logical thinker with problem‑solving tenacity.
Proactive safety and procedural compliance attitude.
Flexibility and willingness to take on challenges.
Time‑management to meet deadlines.
Strong customer focus, high attention to detail and ability to work well in a team or independently.
