Research Associate - Traffic Data Modelling, Applied Mathematics, Statistics | Perth | 18 month FTC
A leading education and research organisation is seeking a talented Research Associate to join a multidisciplinary program focused on Traffic Data Modelling, Applied Mathematics, Statistics. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to an innovative, externally funded research initiative while developing growing research independence.
Your New Role
In this role, you will work with senior academic experts to develop data‑driven behavioural models that analyse and predict traffic dynamics using real‑world trajectory data. Your focus will be on problem formulation, mathematical/statistical modelling, and predictive analysis, rather than computer vision model training.
Responsibilities
Experience working with trajectory or spatiotemporal data, such as movement paths, time-indexed observations, or interaction events
Build data‑driven models for traffic behaviour and safety at roundabouts, intersections, and mid‑block crossings.
Quantify uncertainty and error propagation arising from incomplete observations and tracking noise.
Calibrate, validate, and test models using diverse real‑world datasets.
Translate outputs into clear, evidence‑based insights for planners, engineers, and decision‑makers.
Conduct independent and collaborative research to develop mathematical and statistical models using trajectories extracted from video analytics systems.
Design post‑processing pipelines for trajectory smoothing, segmentation, interaction detection, and event classification.
What You'll Need to Succeed
Strong Experience in Python or R
Experience working with trajectory or spatiotemporal data, such as movement paths, time-indexed observations, or interaction events
Experience with modelling, data analysis, and quantitative research.
Strong background in applied mathematics, statistics, or a related field.
Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment.
Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
What You'll Get in Return
You will join a respected research institution known for delivering impactful work across transport, mobility, and data science. This role offers opportunities for publication, industry collaboration, and developing a strong academic and applied research profile.
