Be a pivotal part of our growing team
As the Engineering Manager, you'll lead an engineering team dedicated to enhancing performance, scalability, user experience, and conversion rates across our portfolio of Shopify sites. You'll leverage your deep technical expertise and strong leadership skills to streamline processes, optimise the Shopify platform and supporting systems architecture, and improve customer experience. This is a hands-on technical leadership role ideal for someone who has built sophisticated e-commerce infrastructure and is now focused on simplification, performance, and maintainability.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership:
Lead, mentor, and scale a team of engineers.
Define technical standards, architecture, and optimisation strategies.
Provide hands-on technical guidance and contribute code or architecture decisions where appropriate.
Performance Optimisation:
Oversee and drive initiatives to improve site speed, scalability, and reliability.
Manage technical audits, implement recommendations, and ensure optimal site performance.
Strategic Collaboration:
Partner closely with Product, Marketing, IT and CX teams to align technical initiatives with business goals.
Prioritise engineering tasks based on impact, resource allocation, and ROI.
Represent the technology function to non-technical stakeholders, clearly communicating complex topics in business terms.
Keep stakeholders informed and engaged, ensuring alignment across functions and bringing them along the technical journey.
Optimise Shopify implementations, integrations, and app ecosystems.
Ensure continuous improvement through rigorous testing, monitoring, and analytics.
Lead the strategic deprecation of complex legacy infrastructure including multi-layered CDN and proxy architecture (e.g., Cloudflare and Vercel).
Streamline and consolidate edge delivery and security into a leaner Shopify-native setup using Shopify Markets and built-in performance tooling.
Own the simplification roadmap and lead technical decisions to remove unnecessary complexity from the previously headless SFCC architecture.
Technical Roadmap:
Develop and execute a clear, data-driven technical roadmap for ongoing optimisation post-migration from SFCC.
Own the transition strategy, including managing technical debt and legacy systems.
Team Management:
Recruit, onboard, and develop top engineering talent.
Foster a collaborative, innovation-focused, and high-performance team culture.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
• 5+ years managing high-performance engineering teams.
• Expertise in Shopify and e-commerce optimisation strategies.
• Experience managing large-scale site migrations and integrations (ideally from SFCC to Shopify).
• Strong understanding of web performance optimisation techniques, SEO fundamentals, and headless architecture.
• Experience refactoring complex technical stacks and simplifying infrastructure.
• Proven ability to communicate effectively with cross-functional teams and non-technical stakeholders.
• Commercial acumen and understanding of how technical decisions impact business performance.
• Proficient in modern development workflows, DevOps, and CI/CD practices.
• Excellent analytical skills, with a focus on data-driven decision making.
• Proven track record working cross-functionally to align technical execution with business outcomes.
Preferred:
• Familiarity with React, GraphQL, APIs, and headless commerce.
• Prior experience in DTC ecommerce is preferred.
