Are you interested in furthering your nursing career into a specialty field? With seven specialty programs, including Intensive Care, Emergency, Perioperative, Rehabilitation, Nephrology, Cardiology, and Acute Medicine, you will receive well-supported and comprehensive training experiences. We are currently seeking Registered Nurses with at least 12 months of experience to join our 2026 programs, set to start in February.

Remuneration: $36.39 - $51.09 Per Hour + 12% Super + Salary Packaging

The Programs
ACUTE MEDICAL PROGRAM: This program features 16-week rotations through the Medical Assessment and Coordination Unit, E1 General Medicine Ward, and Ward F2, focusing on Respiratory, Infectious Diseases, Dermatology, Immunology, and Rheumatology. It includes structured study days and supernumerary clinical training days, with options for 32 hours per week or full-time.
I have a passion for caring for the general medical patient, particularly the elderly and patients during end of life care. I also love the team nursing that comes with the general medical speciality. I love helping people and being apart of patient's health journey.

Rebecca, Registered Nurse | Acute Medical
CARDIOLOGY PROGRAM: Participate in 16-week rotations through the Coronary Care Unit, Cardiac Catheter Laboratory, and G3 Cardiology. The program also incorporates structured study days, two weeks of specialty practice days, and advanced life support assessment and competency. Choose between 32 hours per week or full-time.
EMERGENCY CARE PROGRAM: This well-supported program includes theoretical, practical, and self-directed components with acute network rotations across John Hunter Hospital ED, Calvary Mater Hospital ED, and Belmont District Hospital ED. It is divided into modules such as orientation and physical assessment, paediatrics, fast track, special populations, and resuscitation and trauma. EDVOM and ALS workshops are also offered. Offering 32 hours per week.
INTENSIVE CARE PROGRAM: This comprehensive program includes four face-to-face study days and two weeks of supported orientation. It combines classroom learning with hands-on experience, guiding you from novice to advanced beginner level 2. This program aims at nurses passionate about delivering holistic, high-quality care grounded in evidence-based practice within the critical care environment. At the end of the program, you will be credentialled as an advanced life support provider. Offering 32 hours per week and will include a 4-week rotation between Maitland and Mater ICU departments.
PERIOPERATIVE PRACTICE PROGRAM: This program offers placements in Anaesthetics, PACU, or Intraoperative Nurse roles. It comprises the NSW Ministry of Health Transition to Perioperative Practice Program, including the resource manual and clinical skills. Supported professional development days, simulation centre courses, preceptorship, and supernumerary clinical time. The program offers exposure to a variety of perioperative specialties including paediatrics, neurosurgery, trauma, robotics, and obstetrics just to name a few. Offering 32 hours per week.
Perioperative nursing has endless opportunities for skill development and is an amazing specialty for those who love a fast-paced environment. The combination of hands-on skills and the ability to make a significant impact on patients' lives during critical moments is why I love being a perioperative nurse.

NEPHROLOGY PROGRAM: Grow your career with the Nephrology Transition to Specialty Practice Program, covering Dialysis and Nephrology Nursing. This program includes three 16-week rotations across Wansey Satellite Dialysis Unit, K1 Nephrology Ward, and K1 Acute Dialysis Unit. With five structured study days, dedicated mentors, support from unit CNE/CNC, and two weeks of supernumerary clinical training days. Choose between 32 hours per week or full-time.
I chose Nephrology as there are many opportunities for professional development and growth available. I love the diversity of our patients all the way through their dialysis journey. I also really enjoy the flexibility of working in different areas and the work-life balance.

Training Nephrology Unit
REHABILITATION PROGRAM: Dive into the Rehabilitation Transition to Specialty Program with three 16-week rotations across two John Hunter Hospital Rehabilitation Units and Ward 5D at Maitland Hospital. This program offers exposure to Orthopaedics, Stroke/Neuro, and Amputees/General Debility, with structured study days, supernumerary clinical days, and expert support from our Rehabilitation Nurse Educator and Clinical Nurse Consultants. Offering the flexibility of 32 hours per week or full-time.
I joined the transition to rehabilitation nursing specialty program as I wanted to gain more knowledge and understanding of rehab nursing. I also wanted to experience working in a rehab ward and team. In this position, you will gain support from a Clinical Nurse Consultant, a Nurse Educator and other experienced nurses on the team.
