The job

In this role the responsibilities include:

* Undertake horticultural maintenance duties related to the Australian National Botanic Gardens collections and horticultural displays in accordance with accepted horticultural practices and procedures, for example weeding, pruning and watering, including the recognition of weeds, pests and diseases and appropriate control methods.
* Undertake and ensure the safe use and regular maintenance of plant and equipment in accordance with Gardens practices and procedures.
* Undertake and ensure the safe use of chemicals and fertilisers in accordance with Gardens practices and procedures.
* Assist to provide information to the horticultural record system and section planning managed by the Horticultural Coordinator.
* Assist or provide information relating to the Australian National Botanic Gardens to members of the public if requested.
* Follow Australian National Botanic Gardens Workplace Health and Safety policies.

What we are looking for

We are seeking candidates who can demonstrate the following:

* Demonstrated experience in horticultural maintenance using a range of horticultural plant and equipment, preferably in a high‐presentation ornamental landscape.
* Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of the growth requirements of Australian native plants and a proven ability to apply this knowledge to practical situations.
* Proven ability to work effectively as an individual and as a member of a team.
* Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with staff and members of the public.
* Knowledge and understanding of Government policies on Workplace Participation, Workplace Diversity and Workplace Health and Safety.
* Knowledge of and ability to follow established horticultural work programs and adapt to changing operational priorities as required.
* Demonstrated capacity to accurately record field observations and contribute to plant record updates and maintenance schedules.
* Ability to identify and report horticultural issues—such as irrigation faults, plant health concerns, or safety hazards—in a timely manner.
* Demonstrated commitment to safe work practices and willingness to actively participate in team safety discussions and activities.
* Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage time effectively and complete tasks to a high standard with minimal supervision.

Desirable qualifications

* Certificate III in Horticulture or equivalent experience.
* Minimum 3 years' experience in ornamental horticulture maintenance.
* Chainsaw or arboriculture qualifications.
* Irrigation management training or equivalent.
* Construction Induction White Card (or willingness to obtain).
* Completion of asbestos awareness and silicosis training (or willingness to obtain).

Additional requirements

* Hold and maintain a valid Australian motor vehicle drivers' licence.
* Meet physical fitness minimum standards to undertake work within the role including firefighting as needed.
* Note that you may be required to perform occasional out‐of‐hours and weekend work.
* Wear an official uniform supplied by the department, including during field operations (as applicable), in accordance with the department's uniform policy.
* Wear appropriate protective personal equipment and clothing to comply with departmental Work Health & Safety policies and procedures.

Eligibility and other requirements

Citizenship – to be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.

Pre-employment checks – your suitability for employment will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This process includes a requirement to undergo and satisfy a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance and where required a pre-employment medical assessment, specified mandatory qualification(s) validation and a probation period.
