**Purpose of the role**
The purpose of the position is to analyse financial data and provide commercial, analytical, and financial modelling support to various internal stakeholders in relation to major strategic, commercial and investment projects. This includes the development of reusable user-friendly project financial models, analytical tools and approaches to improve investment decisions.
Please note this role is not involved in any reporting on the corporate performance. Knowledge of financial systems and planning is not relevant. We are building forward looking project evaluation and pricing Excel models, based on cost estimates provided by planners, and then presenting our financial analysis.
**What will you be doing?**
This role provides expert financial modelling and analysis that informs corporation's decision making and planning at an operational and strategic level, supports significant investments, strategic and commercial decisions, and commercial negotiations. The position must be able provide and communicate well insights on complex financial and commercial issues where the analysis required is challenging and demands innovative approaches.
**You will**:
- Review completeness of project cost estimates using the Sydney Water costing methodology and tools, jointly with planners and other experts and data owners across the organisation.
- Review or develop well-structured discount cash flow MS Excel models (including cost, revenue, land tax and income tax projections), provide insights on key value drivers, risks and potential information gaps and conduct sensitivity analysis of key parameters.
- Advise project managers on how to address identify issues. Coordinate feedback with the project evaluation Assurance Team.
- Development of costing and pricing models for Unregulated Products and Services, such as recycled water and renewable energy projects.
- Contribute to improvement of the project costing, evaluation and business case development and pricing tools and guidelines.
- Provide analytical inputs into the executive papers, board papers, business case documents, IPART and government submissions. Validate financial information in the draft papers.
- Add hoc financial and commercial analysis supporting strategic and investment decisions.
**Experience and Skills**:
- A Degree: Business, Economics or Finance (accounting qualification such as CPA or CA is not required).
- Advisory/consulting firm or an investment bank, Strategy or Project Management Office area of a large asset intensive organisation (e.g., a public or private utility, energy or telecommunication company or a large developer).
- Merger & Acquisition experience is relevant but must involve experience with quantitative/financial assessments and business Discount Cash Flow valuations. Qualitative assessments (market analysis and strategic fit) are not relevant.
- Experience with large capital (ideally infrastructure) projects, provides a large advantage.
- People, consulting and communication skills - patience, pragmatic and constructive approach (ability to listen, explain, get buy in, agree next steps); adjust massage to audience (engineers vs. finance managers).
- Independence - ability to plan and manage assigned tasks, escalate if necessary.
