An experienced and innovative Manager to lead the Development Assessment and Archaeology team within the Planning and Heritage Branch.In this role, you will oversee Queensland's heritage protection framework, including assessing and deciding development proposals for State heritage places under the Queensland Heritage Act 1992. This includes managing exemption certificates, heritage agreements, and Development by the State for the Queensland Heritage Council.

Your contribution
Lead the Development Assessment and Archaeology team to play a pivotal role in safeguarding Queensland's heritage. This leadership position offers the opportunity to drive innovative approaches to heritage conservation, oversee critical regulatory functions, and deliver meaningful outcomes for State heritage places under the Queensland Heritage Act 1992.

In this exciting role, you'll manage the assessment and decision-making of certain development proposals affecting State heritage-listed places, as well as responsibilities relating to Queensland's terrestrial and maritime archaeology under the Underwater Cultural Heritage Act 2018 (Commonwealth) and providing technical agency responses for development proposals under the Planning Act 2016.

As a leader, you'll guide a high-performing, multidisciplinary team and foster strong partnerships with key stakeholders including the Queensland Heritage Council, government agencies, community groups and industry to achieve sustainable heritage outcomes. You'll also champion inclusive cultural heritage practices, supporting First Nations peoples in preserving and celebrating their stories and traditions.

For this role, you'll need

- A deep understanding of Queensland's heritage protection system, or the proven ability to quickly develop this knowledge. This includes regulating the impact of development on the cultural heritage significance of State heritage places, both terrestrial and maritime, under the Queensland Heritage Act, the Planning Act 2016, and the Underwater Cultural Heritage Act 2018 (Commonwealth).
- a strong track record of leading multidisciplinary teams, with the ability to plan and allocate resources effectively, recruit and mentor staff, manage performance, and foster a positive workplace culture that aligns with the department's values.
- experience in successfully delivering significant projects in dynamic, high-pressure environments, with a focus on accountability and achieving results. You'll also have the skills to lead complex negotiations and consultations with a diverse range of stakeholders, including heritage place owners, industry bodies, government agencies, and community representatives.
- exceptional communication skills are essential, as you'll be providing authoritative advice, both written and verbal, to State agencies, the Queensland Heritage Council, senior executives, and staff. You'll also be adept at building strong working relationships to prepare complex and sensitive materials, such as government and ministerial briefs.
- bring extensive experience in managing statutory functions, governance, and formal processes for a substantial portfolio or program of work, ensuring compliance and delivering outcomes that align with organisational priorities.
