Primary objective
Provide strategic advice and lead policy development on environment and climate issues to support agency decision-making
and whole of government reforms. Work collaboratively across government and with stakeholders to progress legislation,
policies and initiatives that protect the environment and promote sustainability in the Northern territory.
Context statement
Environment and Climate Policy is responsible for delivering policies that protect the environment and promote sustainability
across the Northern Territory. The team works collaboratively within the agency and across government to progress
regulatory reforms, coordinate policy initiatives, and meet the Northern Territory's environment and climate commitments.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide high-level strategic advice to executive and senior management on environment and climate policy issues.
2. Represent the Department and the Northern Territory on inter-agency, inter-governmental, industry and stakeholder
working groups and committees at local, national and international levels.
3. Lead and manage the development, implementation and evaluation of complex environment and climate policy initiatives,
particularly legislative reform projects.
1. Prepare-high quality submissions, reports and ministerial correspondence on environment and climate policies and
strategies, supported by research and analysis of national and international trends, risks and opportunities.
1. Build and maintain strong collaborative partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to support effective planning,
coordination and delivery of environment and climate policy priorities.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated experience providing strategic policy advice and developing/implementing major policies and projects.
2. Proven ability to lead and manage projects, work within government frameworks, and deliver outcomes that meet
organisational objectives.
1. High level written communication skills, including experience in preparing complex strategies, reports, drafting
instructions, submissions and ministerial and cabinet papers.
4. Strong interpersonal, negotiation and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build effective networks and
facilitate discussions with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
5. Experience representing an organisation on high level working groups and committees, with demonstrated political, social
and organisational awareness and sensitivity.
6. Excellent organisational skills, including the ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
Desirable
1. A tertiary qualification in law, or other relevant discipline.
2. Knowledge of Northern Territory government processes and requirements.
3. Good understanding of national environment and climate policy trends and their implications for the Northern Territory.
