Position Purpose
The Principal Digital Engineer provides expert technical leadership and strategic digital advisory services across WSP's major infrastructure, water, transport, energy, defence and government programs. Operating with high autonomy, the role balances hands‐on digital engineering delivery with high‐value advisory services including digital strategy, data governance, digital twins, system integration and organisational uplift. This role is a national technical authority, helping clients and project teams design, adopt, and put digital systems and data‐centric practices into practice across the asset lifecycle, to shape organisational digital policy, methods, and capability.
Main Activities and Responsibilities
Digital Strategy, Advisory and Client Leadership
* Lead strategic digital advisory engagements for government, utilities, defence and asset owner clients, providing authoritative guidance on digital strategy, information governance, digital twins, system integration, and lifecycle data requirements.
* Translate complex digital concepts into clear roadmaps that support client decision making and organisational change.
* Act as a trusted technical advisor, maintaining strong relationships with senior stakeholders and aligning digital approaches with client goals and constraints.
* Shape digital elements of bids, proposals and pursuits, ensuring solutions demonstrate value, differentiation and technical credibility.
Technical Leadership in Digital Engineering Delivery
* Define and champion digital engineering standards, modelling requirements, information specifications and digital assurance frameworks across multidisciplinary projects.
* Provide expert guidance on BIM execution, model coordination, metadata structures, data governance and the configuration of common data environments.
* Oversee complex digital workflows including federated modelling, design coordination, constructability sequencing, logistics simulations and integration with project and client systems (e.g. Engineering/Document Control, Project Controls and Asset Management Systems).
* Conduct high-level technical review and assurance of digital deliverables to ensure compliance with client and organisational requirements.
Delivery Enablement, Problem Solving and Digital Risk Management
* Resolve digital engineering and information management challenges impacting project delivery, applying structured problem solving, analytical methods and technical insight.
* Identify digital risks early, develop mitigation strategies, and ensure quality and consistency across modelling, data structures and workflow integration.
* Advise project directors and discipline leads on optimal digital delivery configurations, governance models and workflow efficiencies.
Practice Leadership, Capability Development and Innovation
* Lead the development of guidance, frameworks, templates and tools that strengthen WSP's national digital engineering capability.
* Mentor practitioners across engineering, BIM, GIS, data and digital delivery disciplines, fostering capability uplift and consistent technical standards.
* Monitor emerging technologies, standards and policy settings, translating industry trends into practical innovation pathways for projects and clients.
* Represent WSP in industry forums and digital policy discussions, supporting the organisation's market presence and technical influence.
Qualifications (Desirable)
* Bachelor's Degree (Engineering) or equivalent
Experience & Skills
* 10–15+ years' experience in digital engineering, digital advisory, information management or related technical leadership roles across infrastructure, transport, water, energy, defence or government sectors.
* Deep expertise in digital engineering governance, modelling standards, information requirements, data structures and model assurance.
* Strong capability in configuring, governing and assuring integrated digital delivery environments (e.g. Autodesk Construction Cloud, ProjectWise, InEight Document, Aconex, SharePoint‐based environments).
* Demonstrated experience integrating digital workflows across planning, design, construction and asset operations, including alignment with client asset‐information requirements.
* Proficiency in workflow automation or scripting tools (e.g. Python, Dynamo, Power Automate) that support efficiency and data quality.
* Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary digital scopes, resolve complex technical issues and provide authoritative guidance on digital engineering matters.
* Experience shaping digital strategies, asset‐information frameworks, digital‐twin approaches or enterprise‐level information governance models.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to influence, engage and guide senior stakeholders and technical teams.
