Role


An education support class position at this range will perform tasks that are carried out in accordance with guidelines, accepted practice, and school policy under supervision and direction. This may include coordination of other education support class staff within the work area or educational program.

An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students but must not include duties of a teacher as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students can be required individually or in groups up to 4 in controlled circumstances and where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.

We are seeking a Food Technology Assistant to support the College Food and Technology Teachers to deliver the curriculum.

This is a very independent role, consisting of regular daily and weekly tasks, and assisting the teacher when practical classes are held. The role also requires the successful applicant to be adaptable ¿ assisting with catering, supporting extra cooking classes, ordering food for various departments, and assisting with sausage sizzles.

Hours of work are 8.45am - 3.30pm, Monday to Friday

An education support class position at this range commencing at the base will initially be limited to undertaking routine tasks that are carried out under close supervision and direction. Work that carries some degree of independence will generally involve a limited number of tasks performed on a regular basis where priorities are clear, procedures are well established, and direction is readily available. Subject to any specific qualification and/or training requirement, an education support class employee employed in this range may be progressively required to undertake coordination, specialised student/teacher support tasks, or technical tasks as experience in the role is gained.


Responsibilities


Classes

Intensive check re allergies in each class

Once you have prepared and set up the food and equipment for practical classes, you assist where needed for the teacher demonstration, ensuring all students are listening and engaged so they are aware of the correct use of equipment (eg knives, stovetops, cross contamination etc)

After the demonstration assist the students, where needed, to collect their ingredients and equipment, and store away left-over ingredients

Once students begin preparing their items, roam the room to give extra assistance if needed

Check room and procedures for any OH&S issues eg pan on stove with just oil

Once class has finished, assist teacher in checking all benches to ensure that equipment is clean, dry and put away in its correct place

Count all knives to ensure all have been returned

Daily Tasks include, but not limited to:

Check and top up wash baskets

Fridge and freezer checks. Record time and temperature. Adjust if necessary.

Laundry ¿ wash, dry, fold, put away. Ensure an adequate supply at teacher bench

Prepare trolleys

Do dishes and put away equipment

Clean and sanitise servery and centre bench (if used)

Keep staff areas clean and tidy

Ensure all food is safely and appropriately stored. Freeze any leftovers as soon as possible. It helps if you can label and date these.

At end of lesson, ensure all ovens and stovetops are turned off.

Before departing, turn off lights and aircons. Lock doors.

Weekly Tasks include, but not limited to:

Communicate with cooking teacher the recipes requirements for the week ahead, collate ingredients, order grocers for a timely delivery

Groceries delivered and are stored in correct place- cupboard, fridge, freezer

Break up groceries into class recipes

Wash baskets and cleaning cloths so all fresh for following week

Top up washing detergents, sanitisers, general cleaning etc

Checking benches have correct items in them

This role requires the successful applicant to obtain the 'Use Hygienic practices for food safety' certificate, prior to employment and must have, or willing to apply for, a Working with Children Check.
