Primary objective
This role provides high level executive support to the Chief Judge of the Local Court of the Northern Territory while supervising
and supporting services in the Judges' Chambers.
Context statement
The Local Court of the Northern Territory is established by the Local Court Act 2016. The Local Court is the first level of the
Northern Territory's two-tier court system and in the great majority of cases is the first point of contact that members of the public
have with the judicial system. The Court handles the greatest proportion of cases in the Northern Territory, dealing with both
criminal and civil cases.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide superior secretarial services to the Office of the Chief Judge.
2. Monitor/manage the Chief Judge's daily program and appointment diary.
3. Provide correspondence/briefs and supporting materials on request.
4. Undertake ad-hoc projects or investigations of an administrative nature as directed.
5. Liaise with key Local Court stakeholders including the Chief Judge, Principal Registrar and Director Local Court, Registrars,
Circuit Registrar, Executive Management, Courts Administration and the Minister's Office.
6. Collaborate with relevant staff to facilitate Local and Circuit Court listings.
7. Supervise the Executive Assistant and maintain the overall operations of the Judges' Chambers.
1. Oversee and organise travel and accommodation arrangements for Judges and Court staff.
2. Utilise Court and NT Government finance and information systems for finance processing requirements and to provide useful
and timely information that informs decision making.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Well-developed written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
2. Well-developed liaison skills for dealing with a wide range of stakeholders.
3. Demonstrated ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision.
4. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines whilst managing a diverse workload.
5. Demonstrated understanding of the Local Court rules, procedures, associated legislation and business or the ability to acquire
such knowledge.
1. Well-developed management/leadership skills, appropriate for a small team in a dynamic changing environment.
2. Well-developed information technology literacy skills including experience using Microsoft Word and Excel
3. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures in a pressured and sensitive area.
Desirable
1. Relevant tertiary qualifications or experience.
