Mechanical Engineer - Technical & Commercial

Our client is a respected Sydney-based engineering services provider specialising in structural steel, mechanical piping, and installation projects in the manufacturing sector. They're looking for a commercially minded Mechanical Engineer to bridge the front-end opportunity development and back-end delivery.
In this role, you'll:
* Engage directly with clients and lead or support technical sales conversations
* Translate client requirements into practical, buildable mechanical and structural solutions
* Scope work, prepare accurate estimates, and price projects with confidence
* Develop compelling proposals and quotations while supporting commercial negotiations
* Collaborate closely with internal delivery teams to ensure smooth handovers
* Remain involved throughout execution, working as part of a strong team to drive successful outcomes
This is a true hybrid role - technically credible enough to command respect with customers and stakeholders, while commercially sharp enough to help win and deliver profitable work.
The ideal candidate will bring:
* Solid Mechanical Engineering background with hands-on experience in structural steel, mechanical piping, and installation
* Proven commercial exposure - scoping, estimating, pricing, and proposal development
* Comfort engaging clients and contributing to sales processes without being a pure salesperson
* Ability to stay connected from initial opportunity through to project delivery (no "win and walk away")
* Strong collaboration skills and a team-oriented mindset
* Exposure to WIP reporting (or similar project financial tracking) is a distinct advantage - our client can teach their specific processes
What we're not looking for:
* A purely technical design engineer with limited commercial experience
* A salesperson lacking genuine mechanical/technical depth
* Someone who excels at winning work but disengages once delivery begins
