An excellent opportunity is available for an experienced Senior Urban Designer to join a large Western Sydney Council on a temporary basis.
This role will support the delivery of high‐quality urban design outcomes across a growing and diverse local government area. You will work across urban design, built form, heritage, public domain, place‐making, land use, transport, housing, environment and community outcomes.
Reporting to the Manager Urban Planning and Economic Development, you will provide technical advice, research, policy support and project input to help guide future development across key centres, precincts and urban renewal areas.
About the Role
In this role, you will assist with the preparation and delivery of urban design strategies, built form controls, design guidelines, policies, reports and planning documents.
You will work closely with internal teams, external stakeholders, developers, government agencies and the community to support evidence‐based planning and quality urban design outcomes.
Key responsibilities will include:
* Providing technical urban design advice across planning, development and built form matters
* Supporting the preparation of urban design strategies, plans, policies and guidelines
* Assisting with the development of built form controls and place‐based planning documents
* Supporting the preparation of spatial frameworks, design guidelines and development controls
* Assisting with 3D modelling for key centres and precincts
* Undertaking research, analysis and consultation to inform planning outcomes
* Preparing professional reports, correspondence, submissions and internal advice
* Supporting responses to State Government plans, policies, strategies and projects
* Liaising with internal and external stakeholders, including developers, agencies and community members
* Supporting the resolution of urban design, heritage and planning‐related matters
* Maintaining relevant mapping layers and supporting GIS/spatial analysis
* Representing Council at meetings, briefings, committees or stakeholder forums when required
About You
The successful candidate will be a technically capable urban design professional with strong written communication skills, sound judgement and the ability to manage competing planning and design priorities.
You will be confident preparing professional reports, design advice and policy documents, and will be able to explain complex urban design concepts clearly to a range of audiences.
You will ideally bring experience from local government, state government, planning consultancy, architecture, urban design consultancy, strategic planning or a related environment.
To be considered for this role, you will need:
* Tertiary qualifications in urban design, urbanism, architecture or a related field
* Solid experience in urban design, architecture, heritage or a related discipline
* Experience preparing written reports, strategies, policies or professional documents
* Knowledge of contemporary urban design, heritage, built form and planning issues
* Experience preparing built form controls, design guidelines or urban design‐related policies
* Strong research, analytical, problem‐solving and project management skills
* Strong communication, stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills
* Knowledge of NSW planning legislation, including the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 and Local Government Act 1993
* Graphic communication skills using tools such as SketchUp, AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, Giraffe or similar
* Experience across place‐making, urban renewal, built form design or infrastructure improvement projects
* Current Class C Driver Licence
