Role Overview
JOB DESCRIPTION
Westpac's Marketing & Communications Domain is seeking a technically proficient and solution oriented Engineer with strong expertise in Java, Spring Boot, and Hibernate to design, build, and optimise digital integration components within our enterprise ecosystem. You’ll play a critical role in defining API first solutions, contributing to event driven architecture (Kafka), and guiding the development teams to build scalable, secure, and observable components.
Key Responsibilities
Design and build backend and integration solutions using Java (8/11/17), Spring Boot, and Hibernate/JPA Define and deliver REST APIs using Swagger/OpenAPI, aligned with enterprise integration standards Develop microservices and reusable components for data ingestion, orchestration, and downstream delivery Own API and Kafka integrations, including topic design, schemas, consumers, and resilient pub/sub patterns Ensure strong non‑functional requirements (performance, scalability, reliability) with observability via Splunk Provide technical leadership, mentoring engineers and contributing to solution design, governance, and delivery assurance
Required Skills & Attributes
Strong hands‑on experience with Java, Spring Boot / Spring Cloud, Hibernate, and REST API development Proven ability to define and document APIs using Swagger / OpenAPI, including integration contracts Experience working with Apache Kafka for event streaming, topic/schema design, and consumer management Solid understanding of secure API design, including OAuth2, JWT, and authentication best practices Expertise in microservices architecture, CI/CD pipelines, and containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes) Experience with observability and monitoring tools such as Splunk for logging and diagnostics
