About the Opportunity

Under the guidance and supervision of senior legal officers and the manager, the Legal Officer will assist the Response Unit to ensure that the South Australian Government meets its obligations in responding to formal and informal requests from the Commonwealth scheme Operator in circumstances where a State Government agency may be liable for abuse or hold relevant information pursuant to the National Redress Scheme for Institutional Child Sexual Abuse Act 2018 (Cth). In doing so, the Legal Officer will liaise with State Government agencies and the Commonwealth Department of Social Services to ensure timely, accurate and agreed responses and interactions with the National Redress Scheme.

The Legal Officer will also provide advice to the Attorney‑General and Chief Executive on legal policy and law reform relevant to the National Redress Scheme.

The Legal Officer will have the opportunity to attend a variety of meetings, including those with stakeholders and the Inter‑jurisdictional Committee.

About the Business

The State Redress Response Unit (SRRU) oversees and coordinates the participation of the South Australian Government in the National Redress Scheme for Institutional Child Sexual Abuse (the National Redress Scheme). The SRRU is responsible for the coordination of Requests for Information issued by the Scheme, managing requests issued to government agencies and local government for sexual abuse that occurred in connection with a government institution.

The SRRU has a large focus on staff wellbeing and encourages collaborative work, creating a supportive and collegiate working environment. The SRRU promotes work‑life balance with flexible working arrangements available for this role.

Special Conditions for Employment

Employment is dependent upon a National Police Certificate clearance that the AGD finds satisfactory. Successful applicants will be provided further information if an interview is requested. Forms are not to be lodged directly with SA Police (SAPOL) under any circumstances and any fees incurred by applicants in doing so will not be recoverable from the AGD.

Some out of hours work may be required.

Some interstate and intrastate travel may be required.
