A major player within the energy sector has a current requirement for an experienced Welding Engineer to join its established, site-based, transverse engineering team in Bridgwater, Somerset. This is a renewable contract position inside IR35.

The successful candidate will comprise part of a wider, multi-national joint design office (JDO) team responsible for supporting review and acceptance of design activities of a classified plant. This dynamic and multi-disciplinary design team undertakes an important, intelligent customer role on behalf of the project.

The JDO has been created to reinforce site-based engineering and quickly respond to engineering queries/problems arising from site construction to deliver the schedule and deliver an increased scope of work. Being located close to the construction works allows the JDO team to quickly react and provide technical solutions/answers, crucially assisting construction teams swiftly and efficiently.

This is a site-based role that requires office attendance for a minimum of three days per week, with two days of remote work.

Overview

* The post-holder must be a welding or materials engineer contributing to the technical assessment of engineering queries raised by the site contractor on the mechanical and electrical (M&E) scope across the conventional island (CI), balance of plant (BOP) and nuclear island buildings
* The role will consist of both client and responsible designer activities
* The role will be focused on the welding discipline but will interface with other disciplines and with several parties, such as the site contractors (composed of main suppliers and subsuppliers), construction teams, quality teams, project management teams or design teams (embedded within the JDO organisation on site or in the back office).

Key Responsibilities

* Respond to general queries, non-conformances, change and exemption requests originating from the contractor on site with the support of the responsible designer or site experts when needed
* Provide adequate oversight to ensure the nuclear safety and environmental regulation requirements are met
* Support the integrated team with technical assessment of contractor queries (welding defects and other welding or non-destructive testing (NDT)-associated modifications)
* Carry out nuclear safety and environmental assessment (categorisation) of queries
* Challenge design decisions so that engineering and design aligns with the project strategy
* Assist in coordinating support from other external organisations
* Contribute to the resolution and closure of open points
* Assess technical risk and subsequently address this risk
* Maintain a strong relationship with EPR engineering (responsible designer).

Skills Required

* Typically a degree or equivalent experience in a welding engineering discipline
* Experience/understanding of welding engineering and NDT in nuclear or high-hazard industries
* Experience applying multi-disciplinary technical knowledge within the nuclear industry
* Knowledge of the construction/ installation industry
* Knowledge of health & safety legislation, including construction, design and management regulations
* Ability to influence a diverse range of stakeholders, particularly those in a site environment
* Ability to work independently, be proactive and report on and esc
