The Role
Macquarie University Health (MUH) is seeking an Advanced Trainee in Gastroenterology to provide clinical services for both inpatients and outpatients within the speciality.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to:
* Be mentored and work alongside gastroenterologists and other related allied health staff within the team.
* Be exposed to a wide range of gastroenterology cases as inpatients and outpatients (clinics), consultations and endoscopic procedures. Point of contact for infusions and research projects.
* Assist with endoscopy procedures include gastroscopy, colonoscopy, chromoendoscopy, stricture dilatations and balloon enteroscopy.
* Participate in research projects and clinical trials
* Supervise and train students, registrars and other Doctors in Training
* Contribute to educational activities with MUH
* Learn transabdominal ultrasound for IBD.

About You
Ideally you will be enrolled into a higher degree and working on a research project. You will be a registrar seeking to further your skills and knowledge in gastroenterology. You will be keen to work in an innovative multidisciplinary environment and be passionate about providing patient centred care. You will have experience working within busy inpatient settings, while balancing supervision, teaching and mentoring of junior staff and medical students.
Key Accountabilities include (Not limited to):
Clinical
As a Gastroenterology Advanced Trainee, you will provide high-quality, patient-centred care across inpatient and outpatient settings at Macquarie University Hospital (MUH) and affiliated clinics. You'll work closely with a multidisciplinary team and under the guidance of experienced specialists. Key clinical responsibilities include:
* Participating in daily ward rounds, handovers, and timely clinical decision-making
* Assisting in a wide range of endoscopic procedures, including: Gastroscopy and colonoscopy, ERCP and balloon enteroscopy, Chromoendoscopy and stricture dilatation
* Providing consultation and liaison services with other medical teams
* Maintaining accurate and timely electronic medical records
* Supporting safe discharge planning and continuity of care
* Participating in an on-call roster as required
You will be expected to deliver care in accordance with evidence-based best practices and hospital policies, while contributing actively to team-based communication and handover processes.
Administrative
Your administrative duties will support the smooth running of the department and broader hospital system. These include:
* Attending relevant discipline and hospital meetings
* Participating in M&M reviews and incident reporting
* Providing at least four weeks' notice for planned leave and ensuring clinical coverage
* Promptly reporting any incidents that could give rise to a complaint or medico-legal issue
Quality and Research Activities
You will be actively involved in quality improvement and research activities that align with MUH commitment to excellence and innovation. Opportunities include:
* Participating in clinical audits, peer reviews, and root cause analyses
* Supporting hospital accreditation processes and safety reviews
* Contributing to or initiating research projects with your clinical supervisor
* Attending and contributing to M&M and Sentinel Event meetings
Supervision, Training and Education
Teaching and mentorship are integral to this role. You'll work closely with junior doctors and the broader clinical team to foster a culture of learning. Key activities include:
* Supervising junior medical staff and supporting their development
* Contributing to the education of medical students, nurses, and allied health staff
* Attending and presenting at education sessions, journal clubs, and grand rounds
* Representing MUH at internal and external academic forums where appropriate
Professional Development, Continuing Education and Maintenance of Standards

* Participate fully in the relevant college training program, including exam preparation
* Work with supervisors to develop a tailored education and professional development plan
* Engage in continuing medical education and log ongoing development activities
* Be encouraged to present at national conferences such as AGW (poster or oral presentation)

* Demonstrated experience in gastroenterology.

* Demonstrated interest and aptitude for one or more of the following activities: supervision of students; delivery of education activities; research.
* A strong commitment to multidisciplinary approaches to clinical care and ability to work as part of a team.
