About the role
Our federal government client is seeking an APS6-equivalent Interaction Designer to support the development of a national, customer-facing reporting and interaction platform. This role focuses on designing intuitive, accessible and evidence-based user experiences that meet user needs while aligning with security, performance and usability requirements.
This is an initial 8-month contract commencing Monday, 9 March 2026, based in the ACT, with hybrid working arrangements. Work from home can be accommodated, and interstate candidates based in NSW will be considered.
Key responsibilities
* Lead and guide research, design and testing of interaction scenarios, patterns and interface systems
* Design end-to-end user interactions and experiences for digital products and services
* Translate concepts into prototypes and iteratively refine designs based on user feedback
* Create and maintain user journey maps
* Facilitate and participate in user research activities
* Evaluate alternative design solutions and recommend optimal approaches considering performance, security, usability and accessibility
* Interpret and apply visual design and branding guidelines to ensure a consistent user experience
* Collaborate closely with delivery teams and manage key stakeholders
* Work effectively within an Agile delivery environment
Highly desirable criteria
* Demonstrated extensive experience creating end-to-end user journey and experience maps across multiple products, processes or services
* Proven ability to run and manage a user experience design lab
* Experience interpreting NPS or other customer satisfaction metrics
* Strong background facilitating user-centred design and design thinking workshops
* Experience working within Agile delivery teams
* Ability to assess and recommend design options with consideration for security, accessibility, usability and performance requirements
Desirable criteria
* Recognised qualifications in UI/UX Design or a related tertiary discipline
* Hands-on experience with contemporary UI/UX design practices, policies and technologies
* Technical capability across a range of UI/UX tools and applications
* Strong administrative and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise work, allocate tasks and work independently
Skills and experience
* APS6-equivalent experience in Interaction Design or a related discipline
* Strong evidence-based design decision-making skills
* Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities
* Experience delivering customer-focused digital solutions within government or large, complex environments
