Prosecution Officer (Lawyer) Level 3

Temporary, for a period of up to 12 months with the possibly of ongoing employment

$178,434. Package includes salary ($154,403 - $157,430 p.a.), employer's contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is the independent prosecuting authority responsible for the prosecution of all serious indictable offences committed against the laws of New South Wales. We are an agency of over 1100 staff, working throughout NSW to service the main court centres. Our 10 offices have a mix of Crown Prosecutors, Solicitor Advocates, Solicitors and support staff.

The Role

The ODPP seeks a Legal Policy Officer to assist the Deputy Solicitor for Public Prosecutions (Legal) and the Legal and Policy Adviser to prepare submissions and coordinate the ODPP's responses on a range of policy and law reform initiatives. This includes performing research and consultation, drafting policy submissions, preparing materials for and attending external and internal stakeholder committees, updating legal resources in relation to the impact of legislative and policy/procedural changes on ODPP prosecutions.

Key Accountabilities include:

* Research, analyse and review complex policy reform issues in the area of criminal law, identifying emerging issues, developing evidence-based options and recommended solutions to resolve problems and mitigate risks.
* Build and maintain relationships with key internal and external stakeholders in the policy space, including briefing the Director on policy reform initiatives.
* Prepare high quality policy submissions and correspondence aligned with the ODPP's position in relation to a broad range of policy reform proposals in the criminal justice area.
* Collaborate with the Legal Resources team to maintain and enhance legal resources available for ODPP lawyers and with the policy team to develop policy responses on behalf of the Director.
* Monitor, evaluate and report on the development and/or implementation of policy reforms affecting the ODPP to identify issues and ensure the achievement of desired outcomes.
* Assist the Deputy Solicitor (Legal) and Legal and Policy Adviser to ensure ODPP objectives are achieved.

About you

* Holds a Degree or diploma in law and admitted as a Legal Practitioner of the Supreme Court of New South Wales.
* Holds a Practising Certificate issued by the Law Society of NSW.
* Extensive knowledge of ODPP Prosecution Guidelines, criminal law, practice and procedure.
* Demonstrated awareness of issues and needs of vulnerable witnesses such as children, First Nations people, and people with a range of disabilities.
* Experience in legal drafting including writing policy submissions, and in legal research and the interpretation of legislation.
* Excellent written and oral expression.

* Outline your experience as a criminal lawyer as well as your experience working in a team environment. Include examples that demonstrate both your knowledge of criminal law and procedure, and your ability to work collaboratively within a team to deliver high-quality work.
