The role

The Salvation Army is one of Australia's largest and most-loved charities, helping thousands of Australians every year find hope in the midst of all kinds of personal hardship. We are looking for compassionate people to volunteer as Retail Cashiers.

About the Role

Retail Cashiers play an important role bringing diligence, professionalism and friendliness to ensure transactions at point of sale run smoothly and efficiently. This role is often the first point of contact for customers and donors, and is key in ensuring customers leave the store with a lasting positive impression.

Key Responsibilities

  • Customer Service: Warmly greet all customers and provide guidance to store areas, inform of specials, and assist donors and community members seeking material aid.
  • Point of Sale: Assist with sales transactions, answering customer enquiries in store and over the phone.
  • Displays and Merchandising: With guidance of the store manager, ensure items in the point of sale area are displayed attractively and safely.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience in retail, point of sale systems and customer service preferred but not mandatory as volunteers are supported with on‐the‐job training.

Background Check Requirements

As this role involves handling money, a Police Check is required. The Salvation Army is a child‐safe organisation and is committed to protecting children and young people from harm. All child‐related roles will require a Working with Children Check; certain volunteer roles may also require a National Police Check.

Development Opportunities

This volunteer role provides an opportunity to develop skills and build experience in retail practices and customer service.

Time Required & Commitment

The schedule is agreed with the manager and includes morning and afternoon shifts that suit school hours.
