Overview

Australian Signals Directorate – Darwin NT. Access Foundation Branch within Mission Capability Division is a cross-functional, integrated team of Analysts, Developers, Engineers, RF Technicians and Project Specialists working to deliver critical capabilities against some of ASD's hardest SIGINT access problems. Shoal Bay Receiving Station (SBRS) in Darwin and Australian Defence Satellite Communications Station (ADSCS) in Geraldton are remote intelligence facilities managed by ASD. The role involves supporting the internal infrastructure of one of the largest organisations within the National Intelligence Community, requiring collaboration across sites and areas of the organisation.

We are seeking energetic, highly organised and task-orientated Lead Data Centre Administrators to undertake a broad range of work in support of ASD's mission. The successful candidate will be responsible for the daily operations and maintenance of data center facilities, ensuring high availability, reliability, and performance of critical systems and network infrastructure. The role is hands-on, covering physical hardware installation, network cabling, monitoring environmental controls and incident response.

Due to the unique nature of the work, staff may have the opportunity to obtain additional qualifications including construction cards, truck and forklift licenses.

Key Responsibilities

Infrastructure Management:

* Lead and develop the data center administration.
* Promote a strong safety and continuous improvement culture across the two locations.
* Coordinate the installation, configuration, and maintenance of servers, storage arrays, network devices, and other data center hardware.
* Manage rack space, power distribution, and cable management (copper and fiber) to ensure a clean, organized, and efficient environment.
* Perform regular hardware maintenance, upgrades, and component replacements.

Operations, Monitoring & Incident Management:

* Monitor the health and performance of all data center infrastructure, including power (UPS, PDUs), cooling (HVAC), and environmental systems.
* Respond promptly to alerts and alarms, diagnosing and working with appropriate teams to resolve hardware and network issues to minimize downtime.
* Maintain meticulous documentation of data center layouts, asset inventory, network diagrams, and operational procedures.

Security & Compliance:

* Assist in security and compliance audits (e.g., ISO 27001, SOC 2, PCI) by providing evidence and upholding standards.
* Coordinate with Site resources to act as a remote hands technician for other geographically dispersed IT teams to assist with troubleshooting and physical tasks.
* Coordinate with vendors and external technicians for hardware repairs, maintenance, and new installations.

Capacity Planning:

* Track and report on power, space, and cooling usage.
* Assist in planning for future capacity needs to support business growth.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Citizenship – Applicants must be an Australian citizen. Only in exceptional circumstances can this requirement be waived.

Security Clearance – Willing and able to obtain and maintain the requisite security clearance for the duration of employment with ASD.

Health Assessment – May be required to undergo a medical examination by the Agency's preferred medical provider.

Organisational Suitability – Required to undergo an Organisational Suitability Assessment.

Experience – 3+ years in a data centre operations, network operations, or systems administrator role. Hands-on experience with server hardware (e.g., Dell, HP, Cisco UCS), storage systems (e.g., NetApp, Pure, Dell EMC), and network equipment (e.g., Cisco, Arista, Juniper). Understanding of data centre power and cooling concepts (UPS, PDUs, CRAC units). Proficient in cable standards (Cat6, fibre optics). Familiarity with monitoring tools (Nagios, Zabbix, SolarWinds, DCIM).

Physical & Documentation – Ability to perform physical tasks up to 25 kg and meticulous documentation of data center layouts and procedures.
