Job Title: Science Support Technician
As a valued member of our school community, we are seeking an experienced and skilled Science Support Technician to join our team. This is a part-time position that involves working closely with science teaching staff to maintain an efficient system for the use and allocation of materials and equipment in the science laboratory.
Responsibilities:
* Liaise with science teaching staff on their needs for practical work and maintain an effective system for the use and allocation of materials and equipment;
* Assist science teaching staff with demonstrations under the guidance of the teacher;
* Assist science teaching staff in instructing students on the safe use and care of equipment;
* Advise and assist science teaching staff in safety matters relating to the science laboratory;
* Demonstrate laboratory techniques to science teaching staff and students;
* Set out equipment and materials for classroom or departmental use;
* Prepare solutions, stains, and media for use in the laboratory;
* Maintain a safe chemical storage, handling, and disposal system in accordance with current regulations;
* Assist with security of the science laboratory and equipment;
* Maintain an inventory of equipment, chemicals, and conduct annual stocktakes;
* Keep records of consumables used regularly and maintain adequate supplies;
* Assist with STEM week preparations and participate in the college's STEM night;
* Acquire relevant catalogues and price lists;
* Order equipment and chemicals in consultation with science teachers;
* Keep accurate records of purchases, confirming safe arrival of all products;
* Gather glassware and general equipment for laboratory use;
* Service, calibrate, and clean laboratory apparatus and equipment;
* Develop maintenance procedures for laboratory equipment and arrange for maintenance as required;
* Report damages to equipment and arrange repairs;
* Conduct safety audits for the laboratories;
* Maintain clean and organized science laboratories;
* Care for flora and fauna within the science department in accordance with current regulations;
* Collect and maintain living specimens in accordance with regulations;
* Collect off-campus scientific materials and field samples;
* Maintain MSDS/RAS records;
* Liaise with external organizations and industries for the acquisition of equipment and resources;
* Liaise with other schools to share resources;
* Assist with the development of operational, OH&S, and budgetary policies within the science department.
Requirements:
* Post-secondary qualifications in a science-related field such as a Science degree, Diploma of Laboratory Technology, or Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques;
* Excellent knowledge of materials used in science curriculum;
* Sound knowledge of scientific procedures and laboratory practices suited to the school environment;
* Proven ability to prioritize tasks, demonstrate initiative, and take a proactive approach to responsibilities;
* Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team, fostering support and cooperation among colleagues;
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to engage a range of stakeholders effectively;
* Ability to work autonomously once tasks are delegated;
* Ability to work calmly under pressure and provide good role modeling to students by showing support and guidance in a classroom setting.

Working Conditions:

This role involves working in office and classroom environments, with some travel accompanying students around and off campus for excursions. The successful applicant will be required to work collaboratively as a member of a team, fostering support and cooperation among colleagues, while maintaining a high level of professionalism and integrity.
