The Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) Vision is \"A world where all kids thrive\". RCH is a cornerstone member of the Melbourne Children's Campus, partnering with Murdoch Children's Research Institute, the University of Melbourne Department of Paediatrics and The Royal Children's Hospital Foundation. Founded in 1870, RCH has cared for children and young people in Victoria for over 150 years. About the Role
This permanent part‐time position (40 hours per fortnight) is within the Perinatal Retrieval Service (PIPER) at RCH. The Retrieval Nurse participates in patient retrievals by road, fixed‐wing and rotary‐wing aircraft throughout Victoria and occasionally interstate or overseas. The role ensures that clinical practice and delivery of care is consistent with RCH and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) practice, providing comprehensive, safe, evidence‐based care to achieve optimal health outcomes. The nurse also coordinates perinatal, neonatal and paediatric referrals and retrievals, ensuring all transport is organised, safe and timely, and participates in return transport of convalescent neonates when required. Classification is YW12 to YW12‐ANUM Grade 2 under the Nursing Award ($100,000 to $120,848 – pro‐rata for part‐time, plus superannuation).
About the Department
PIPER improves health outcomes for newborn babies, children and women by providing emergency consultation and medical retrieval services for babies, infants, children, adolescents, and high‐risk pregnant women. Its statewide role includes coordinating NICU/PICU and maternity bed utilisation, collaborating with key stakeholders in planning strategies to improve neonatal, paediatric and maternity services in Victoria, and supporting clinicians through outreach education programs focused on non‐tertiary health services that refer to PIPER.
What You'll Achieve
* Coordinate calls with NETS, PETS or PERS consultants and receiving hospital consultants to triage and determine potential neonatal, paediatric or obstetric transport requirements.
* Assess, stabilise and evaluate patients' clinical status at the referring hospital, during transport and prior to admission to a tertiary care centre or destination facility.
* Develop a comprehensive understanding of all equipment functions and troubleshoot as required.
* Coordinate transport mode, personnel and equipment to ensure efficient retrievals.
* Maintain written documentation and computerised records pertaining to coordination and retrieval.
To Be Successful In This Role, You Will Have
* Current neonatal intensive care skills, including care for neonates on HFOV and nitric oxide.
* Ability to participate in aircraft (helicopter and fixed‐wing) and road retrievals.
* Demonstrated skills in planning and coordinating care delivery.
* Proven ability and skills to build collaborative relationships and work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
* Demonstrated ability to liaise with a wide range of staff, especially medical staff and management.
* Well‐developed interpersonal and communication skills.
* Critical thinking and problem‐solving skills.

* Current National Criminal Record Check, or willingness to obtain.
