Who we are
The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals. These goals are to:
* maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within it,
* protect the Antarctic environment,
* understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system,
* undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance.
The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands.
Antarctic Operations and Safety Branch plan, coordinate, facilitate and deliver operations for the Australian Antarctic Program by safely resupplying and sustaining the Antarctic Stations and building operational capacity to deliver future Antarctic projects.
The AAD's Maritime Asset Management team works jointly with the Maritime Logistics section to jointly facilitate and administer the full scope of maritime activities for the AAD each season, encompassing:
* the provision of all shipping and watercraft capabilities for operations in the Antarctic, sub-Antarctic and the Southern Ocean,
* the planning, management and execution of voyages to deliver program outcomes as defined in each seasonal plan,
* the recruitment, training and deployment of specialist voyage management and watercraft operation personnel,
* the execution of responsibilities as 'vessel owner' for the RSV Nuyina on behalf of the Commonwealth of Australia, including through joint management with Serco Defence as the contracted Ship Manager; and
* Coordinate all vessel operation and lifecycle maintenance activities for the RSV Nuyina.
The Job
* Provide leadership, direction and support within the Maritime Asset Management Team by fostering a strong culture of safety, inclusion, equity and flexibility.
* Manage individual and contractor performance, assess behaviour and work competency, and provide regular and constructive feedback, counselling and reporting.
* Development of process and procedures in support of functional maritime asset interfaces.
* Work closely with and in support of the Contracts and Governance, Assurance and Compliance and Technical and Engineering teams within the Maritime Asset Management Section.
* Lead projects relating to the procurement of supplementary shipping services to the AAP in accordance with Commonwealth Procurement Rules.
* Lead or co-ordinate projects relating to the introduction of new maritime interface capabilities.
* Manage budgets and financial processes, including operational and capital expenditure programs, in line with policies to achieve the Department's strategic goals.
* Physical and electronic record management.
* Implement Government policies on behalf of the AAD with limited direction from the Director, Maritime Asset Management.
* Any other duties as necessary in support of the Maritime Asset Management team's primary functions.
Coordinate functional interfaces between RSV Nuyina and the ship's supporting capabilities including:
* Aviation Services
* AAD Maritime Operations – Watercraft
* Serco AP Watercraft Operations
* Station and Field Operations
* ICT and Satellite Communications
* Protective Security – including compliance with the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF)
* Port of Hobart
Skills and capabilities
* Proven leader who fosters mutually beneficial relationships and develops productive, diverse and inclusive teams.
* Exceptional communication skills and a proven ability to work collaboratively and liaise extensively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. This includes demonstrated commercial acumen and high-level negotiation skills to optimise cost of ownership and balance value, compliance, efficiency, risk and service levels.
* Demonstrated experience in analysing and interpreting procedural, regulatory and legislative documentation to facilitate providing advice to senior management, along with the production of procedural documentation and training programs.
* A demonstrated commitment to modern WH&S and environmental management principles and practices.
* Proven ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders and to carefully manage those associated relationships.
Desirable Qualifications
Relevant qualification/s from an Australian tertiary institution and/or demonstrated industry and leadership experience.
Relevant qualifications or demonstrated experience in the management of ICT systems and networks.
