The Senior Systems Engineer (SSE) is accountable for software development, configuration, and enhancement of OSS Assurance Systems including both off the shell product and inhouse built applications. The Systems Engineer is a hands-on software developer role but need to understand the business requirements prior to implementing the required solution, selecting the technology stack in alignment with the Solution Designer / Architects and to agreed roadmap and strategy.
What you'll be doing
* Hands on Software development for custom build or customization of an existing product to documented requirements.
* Capable of translating high level designs into low level component designs.
* The systems Engineer will be knowledgeable across a wide range of technologies & concepts including software development in a range of languages: Java, JavaScript, Groovy, Python, Shell scripts, experience in docker and Kubernetes, rules engines, messaging bus, relational & graph & OLAP databases, and a range of operating systems (Linux, Windows).
* Software development & unit testing to build the defined component level designs, utilizing common industry design patterns, frameworks and accelerators to start projects from scratch, build upon those frameworks & patterns to deliver the intended design.
* Implementing best practices in relation to unit testing, test driven development and any other methodologies to ensure high software development quality.
* Provide L3 support to OSS Operations teams for major incidents and managing corrective fixes where the fix requires an in-house software development or configuration change.
* Management of source code, configuration and build & deployment tools.
* Management of supplier personnel, and deliverables, where the software development is outsourced to a vendor, owning the source code once that is handed to Optus.
* Input into sourcing activities for supplier services in relation to software design and development.
* Management of all nonproduction environments.
* Leading a small team of developers (vendor or contractors) to complete a custom build project if required.
* Assisting platform owners in product / platform roadmap.
What makes you perfect for the role?
* Degree‑qualified in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related field, with 15+ years' IT experience and 8+ years' hands‑on software development & database administration experience.
* Senior-level expertise (5+ years) in application design, high‑throughput systems, enterprise‑grade architecture, and end‑to‑end software development using Java, Groovy, Golang, JavaScript frameworks, and Spring Boot.
* Hands‑on implementation of Grafana, Drools, Groovy scripting, Neo4j, Camunda, Apache NiFi, as well as relational (PostgreSQL/Oracle), graph, and OLAP databases, including partitioning and active/active clusters.
* Strong skills in hardware sizing, containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes), and understanding of public cloud architectures, with experience deploying large-scale, high‑volume systems (300GB/day XML ingestion, 40B data points/report
* Solid understanding of Telco OSS Assurance domains, plus intermediate capability in Data Engineering, AI/ML, and experience with forecasting and monitoring tools such as Prophet, Prometheus, and DuckDB.
* Proven ability to lead teams, mentor technical staff, manage work allocation, and oversee vendor deliverables, including familiarity with Statements of Work, contracting, and commercial negotiations.
