Position Information
Bourke High School, situated in the historic town of Bourke in northwest New South Wales, has a rich legacy deeply rooted in its location on traditional Aboriginal land along the banks of the Darling River. The school has 130 students enrolled from Year 7 to 12, 90% of which identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
The Bourke Local Government Area (LGA) covers lands of Barkindji/Paakantyi and Ngemba/Ngiyampaa. Ngemba/Ngiyampaa extends from Brewarrina along the Barwon-Darling River through Karulkiyalu 'stone country people' and extending south-west covering nhiilyikiyalu 'nilyah tree people', and pilaarrkiyalu 'belah tree peoples' territories. Mt Gundabooka and Mt Grenfell possess some of the most significant rock art and cultural heritage sites in Bourke/Cobar regions. Barkindji/Paakantyi means 'People belonging to the Darling River' and extends from Bourke along the 'Baaka' or Darling River to its junction with the Murray River. It also extends up the Paroo River. Significant sites on Barkindji country include Toorale National Park, Nocholeche Nature Reserve, Wanaaring and Louth Villages. Remnants of large campfire sites, scarred trees in red gums and middens are evidence of occupation for millenia.
