Primary objective
As part of a team provide high quality administrative and paralegal support to the Legislation and Legal Policy lawyers and the
wider Strategic Policy Coordination Division.
Context statement
Legislation and Legal Policy Unit provides strategic legal and justice related policy advice to government. Legislation and Legal
Policy develop, reviews and implements legislative change, advises the Attorney-General, other Ministers as relevant and the
Government on policy, legal and justice measures and provides ministerial support as necessary to the Attorney-General to enable
the Minister to undertake their functions and administrative responsibilities.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide paralegal support, including undertaking research and other legal support to the lawyers based in the Legislation and
Legal Policy Unit.
1. Provide high level legal administration support including responding to telephone enquiries, booking travel/vehicles,
maintaining file and document management systems other administration tasks as directed.
1. Prepare draft legal documentation, Ministerials, Flash Briefs and other briefing papers, correspondence to stakeholders, debate
notes and other documents for Legal Policy lawyers.
1. Liaise with Secretariat in relation to timing of Ministerials, Flash Briefs and any other Cabinet documents.
2. Assist with coordination of stakeholder consultation across government and non-government, provide secretarial support for
meetings and working groups as required.
1. Prepare routine reports to the Minister and Cabinet in liaison with Legal Policy lawyers on behalf of the Department.
2. Manage a range of concurrent activities in a timely and efficient manner, with minimum supervision, ensuring that deadlines
are adhered to.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Proven experience as a paralegal, legal secretary or other law related position.
1. Sound organisational and analytical skills and high-level of self-management, including a proven ability to determine workload
priorities, work under pressure, team player and meet stringent deadlines without close supervision in a busy environment.
1. Sound interpersonal skills together with good oral and written communication skills to be able to communicate effectively with
a wide range of internal and external stakeholders of varying backgrounds.
1. Experience in document and file management, including a sound working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet
programs.
1. Experience working in a cross-cultural environment.
Desirable
1. Certificate in Legal Studies, or study towards a degree in law or similar.
1. Experience in research and the preparation of draft reports, Ministerials / Cabinet correspondence or similar.
2. Experience in the interpretation and application of legislation.
