Security Clearance: NV1 (Mandatory)
Engagement: Full-time | 40 hours per week
About the position:
This Communications Engineer role operates within a Defence maritime acquisition environment, providing engineering assurance across complex vessel platforms. The focus is not installation or operational support it is design review, technical certification, and delegated engineering authority.
You will act as a subject matter expert across communications and electronic systems, ensuring outputs align with legislation, classification standards, and Authorised Engineering Organisation (AEO) requirements. The work sits at the intersection of engineering governance, risk management, and shipbuilding program delivery.
What you'll do:
Conduct design reviews, design acceptance, and technical certification of communications engineering outputs
Exercise Delegated Technical Authority within communications, navigation, sensors, command and control, and situational awareness systems
Identify technical and safety risks and develop formal risk assessments for senior engineering consideration
Review engineering documentation, V&V artefacts, and classification society approvals within contracted timeframes
What we are looking for:
Demonstrated long-term experience in Defence acquisition or shipbuilding environments
Strong background in communications, electronic, navigation, or command and control system design or review
Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechatronics, Mechanical, or relevant engineering discipline
Confidence operating within engineering governance frameworks and technical authority structures
Seniority fit:
This role suits engineers comfortable operating under delegated authority rather than purely contributing at subsystem level.
Experience reviewing multidisciplinary engineering outputs (marine, electrical, mechanical interfaces) is expected
Ability to mentor and uplift internal engineering capability is highly regarded
Technology & environment:
Defence maritime vessel communications and electronic systems
Navigation systems, sensors, situational awareness, and command & control systems
Authorised Engineering Organisation (AEO) governance structures
Classification society documentation and engineering certification processes
Integration across multi-discipline engineering domains
A quick note before you apply:
This role sits within a structured Defence acquisition program where engineering decisions carry operational consequence
If your experience has primarily been operational maintenance without exposure to formal design review or technical certification, this may not align with the current need
An active NV1 clearance is required.
The role involves working within strict engineering governance and documentation standards
