Legal Officer – Australian Submarine Agency Join the Australian Submarine Agency (ASA) as a Legal Officer (EL 2). ASA delivers a historic and transformative nuclear‑powered submarine program that will transform Australia’s economic and national security landscape for decades.
The Role The ASA Legal team provides dedicated in‑house legal advice and supports the implementation of the Optimal Pathway. As a Legal Officer you will provide timely and tailored legal advice, oversee junior lawyers, and support operational and strategic needs.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver high‑quality legal advice on commercial and administrative law matters in a government context.
Oversee the work of junior lawyers, provide mentorship and manage performance.
Advise on procurement, FOI, administrative law, and emerging areas of law for ASA.
Collaborate internally, with government agencies, industry and international partners.
Engage with legal risk and provide frank and fearless advice to senior personnel.
Qualifications
EL 2 lawyer with a background in commercial law and/or administrative law.
Strong knowledge of relevant legislative frameworks and government decision‑making.
Demonstrated ability to deliver strategic legal services with minimal supervision.
Experience mentoring and growing junior lawyers, setting performance standards.
Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to influence senior staff.
Broad awareness of Australia’s defence setting and ASA strategic issues.
Benefits & Arrangement Base annual pay A$159,803.00–A$167,660.00. The role is Canberra based but may be open to a candidate from Adelaide or Perth. Flexible/On‑site Office Arrangement with potential for limited work from home. Eligible for the Building Capability Payment (BCP).
