About This Opportunity
In this role, you will support world leading research on Food and Beverage Technology in supporting development of premium foods and beverages. The position is with the Centre for Nutrition and Food Science of Queensland Alliance or Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI). As a research technician within QAAFI, you will provide technical expertise in compositional analysis of food products and work collaboratively to support strategic and applied research projects within the Trailblazer funded FaBA research program, support delivery of impactful outcomes and strengthen engagement with industry partners.
Key responsibilities will include:
* Coordinate and perform technical aspects of food compositional analysis.
* Assists in the design of research studies, under supervision of senior staff.
* Develop and improve methods to efficiently evaluate grain compositional factors that affect processing, end-use, nutritional quality of oats for a range of oat-based products.
* Applies and instruct other on the application of specialist research skills, including sample preparation of food products for chemical analysis, physico-chemical properties of grain flours and quality of oat-based products.
* Assists in the conduct of complex experiments, involving identifying and measuring key quality-determining components in oat-based products.
* Designs and conducts shelf-life testing of food products.
* Maintenance and troubleshooting issues with scientific equipment.
* Any other duties as reasonably directed by your supervisor.

About You
Essential:
* Completion of a degree level qualification in Science, Food Science and Technology, Cereal Chemistry or equivalent; or completion of a Diploma with relevant work experience.
* Demonstrated experience in addressing quality of cereals, preferable related to the grain composition, physico-chemical properties for end-use food products.
* Experience with laboratory techniques such as dough rheology, grain quality-related laboratory protocols.
* Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently on routine laboratory tasks.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills, well-organised, methodical and self-motivated
Desirable:
* Experience with oat or rice quality evaluation (milling, cooking, sensory, eating or nutritional quality)
* Experience in shelf-life testing of food products
* Previous experience in a similar research support or technical role.
* Experience in microbial quality control
The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia and others as required.
