Specialist Doctor in Ophthalmology
The closing date is 10 December.
The Sussex Eye Hospital is a specialist eye hospital and the teaching hub of the newly formed Kent, Surrey and Sussex Deanery and KSS School of Ophthalmology. We serve a population of approximately 750,000, through the hub at the Sussex Eye Hospital and the spoke unit at Princes Royal Hospital. The retinal referral population is close to 1 million. The Sussex Eye Hospital is in close proximity to the Royal Sussex County Hospital which provides specialist investigations and liaison with other disciplines.
Main duties of the job
Carrying out independent outpatient clinics based on appropriate skills and experience.
Supporting subspecialty clinics including Glaucoma, Cataract and A&E.
Negotiating the number of clinics with the successful candidate.
Participating in the first on-call rota if necessary.
Providing clinical supervision and support to junior medical doctors, optometrists, nurses, technicians and orthoptists running clinics at the same time in the Ophthalmology unit.
Performing autonomous surgery lists and providing support to trainees for dedicated surgical lists.
Having overall accountability for the patients operated on with oversight from a consultant.
Participating in pre and post-op management of patients operated on.
Participating in any national data collection requirement for surgical procedures performed.
Providing cover on a shared basis with colleagues when unforeseen short notice absences occur.
Deputising from time to time for absent colleagues and, exceptionally, performing additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances to ensure the safe running of the Department.

Job responsibilities
Work in close collaboration with other health care professionals across organisational boundaries to ensure the service meets the needs of the patient.
Attend and contribute in the Senior Medical Doctor Meetings.
Act as a role model for the Medical and the wider multi-professional team.
Manage own caseload and ensure all clinical correspondence / actions for patients is completed.
Consider performing additional professional activities to contribute to the maintenance of acceptable standards of conduct and performance of the hospital.

Person Specification
Experience / Qualifications
Postgraduate qualification FRC(specialty - e.g. FRCS, FRCA, etc.) or its recognised equivalent.
Full registration and a licence to practice with the General Medical / Dental Council.
Completed a minimum of 12 years medical / dental work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical / dental qualification, of which a minimum of six years should have been in a relevant specialty in the Specialty Doctor and / or closed SAS grades.
Equivalent years' experience in a relevant specialty from other medical / dental grades including from overseas will also be accepted.
Higher Degree
Knowledge
Breadth of experience in and outside specialty.
Understanding of: NHS / Clinical governance / Resource constraints.
Organisation and Planning
Experience and ability to work in multi-professional teams.
Evidence of managerial skills
Achievements / Course attended.
Teaching Skills
Evidence of an interest and commitment to teaching.
Recognised teaching qualification.
Academic and Research
Evidence of participation in audit.
Research experience.
Publications.
Prizes and honours.
Appropriate progression of career to date.
Personal Attributes
Evidence of: Good communication skills both oral and written.
