As a Payroll Accountant, you will play an essential role in supporting Service Stream's Group Finance and Payroll teams to ensure all financial obligations are met in accordance with accounting standards, company policy, and external compliance requirements. This position is central to maintaining a clean and accurate balance sheet, ensuring ledger integrity, supporting financial audits, and upholding strong financial controls across the organisation. You will contribute to the accuracy and transparency of Service Stream's financial statements while supporting continuous process improvement.
This is a permanent full‑time position based out of our Melbourne office, supporting hybrid working arrangements.
About the role
• Prepare and post payroll-related transactions including pay runs, accruals and provisions.
• Prepare and post subcontractor on‑cost transactions.
• Prepare and post employee-related job costing based on timesheet information.
• Review financial results to identify and correct mispostings.
• Prepare all payroll‑related balance sheet reconciliations, including clearing accounts, leave provisions and on‑cost prepayments/accruals.
• Investigate, understand and resolve unknown balances identified within the balance sheet.
• Identify and highlight risk areas or issues arising within the balance sheet.
• Prepare payroll reporting for internal stakeholders and respond to queries from Business Unit Finance teams.
• Assist with period‑end close activities for the finance team.
• Identify opportunities for process improvement and support implementation of improvements.
• Prepare and maintain process and policy documentation.
• Undertake ad hoc financial analysis of payroll data.
• Support payroll and on‑cost audits completed by the ATO, PwC or other external bodies.
• Support the wider finance team with general duties as required.
Skills and experience
• Minimum of 2 years relevant finance experience.
• High proficiency in Excel.
• Medium proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
• Experience supporting financial controls, reconciliations, and ledger maintenance.
• Strong analytical skills and strong attention to detail.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with both finance and non‑finance stakeholders.
Qualifications
• CPA / CA qualification (or equivalent) desirable.
