Senior Research Scientist - Genebank Curator
The State of Victoria is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Research Scientist and Genebank Curator to join the Australian Grains Genebank (AGG) team.
The AGG is the national center for grain crop genetic resources, mandated to acquire, conserve, and distribute these resources to underpin the development of more resilient and productive grain crop varieties.
Funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and Agriculture Victoria Research, the AGG aims to unlock the genetic potential of plant genetic resources to accelerate cereal, oilseed, and pulse crop improvement for the benefit of the Australian grains industry.
The AGG utilises digital and genomic technologies to enhance curation efficiency, preserve biodiversity, and facilitate informed selection of its plant genetic resources for use in research and breeding.
Role Overview
As Senior Genebank Curator, you will provide leadership in research and innovation to improve plant genetic resource conservation, management, and utilisation outcomes.
The role requires expertise across grain crop species, strong project development and management skills, experience in quality management systems, and stakeholder and industry engagement.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead research and innovation to improve plant genetic resource conservation, management, and utilisation outcomes
* Provide expertise across grain crop species, including experimental design, data collection, analysis, and reporting
* Develop and manage projects to achieve high-quality, high-impact science outcomes for industry
* Maintain relationships with industry and research institutions at state, national, and international levels
* Utilise computer software systems, including genebank inventory management systems, statistical analysis platforms, and Microsoft Office programs
* Manage resources and staff, prioritise tasks, and meet deadlines while identifying challenges and implementing practical solutions
Requirements
* PhD in agriculture or related field, with at least 5 years post-doctoral research experience
* Demonstrated experience with scientific field-based research projects across agricultural grain crops
* Strong communication and publication track record, with ability to prepare high-quality reports and peer-reviewed journal publications
* Demonstrated stakeholder management skills, with ability to establish collaborative relationships with industry and research institutions
* High level of experience using computer software systems and willingness to work with new technologies
