The Role
The Assistant Director Business Management is responsible for leading and managing business activities and reporting obligations for Defence Legal.
The role ensures that Defence Legal is compliant with whole-of-government reporting requirements, including the preparation and submission of reports to external government stakeholders. Additionally, the Assistant Director oversees Defence Legal's internal budget priorities and commitments based on its current case load and emerging legal services demands.
The Assistant Director works closely with the Finance Business Partner from Defence Finance Group, and other external stakeholders such as the Attorney-General's Department and the Australian Government Actuary.
About our Team
Legal Practice Enablement (LPE) plays a critical enabling role within Defence Legal, ensuring that legal officers are supported to deliver high quality legal services across Defence. LPE provides centralised operational and administrative support functions that underpin the effective delivery of legal advice and capability. Its responsibilities include triage of legal enquiries, strategic workforce support, financial coordination, knowledge and information management, governance and reporting, and continuous improvement of legal practice processes.
LPE works in close partnership with legal teams, Defence stakeholders and enterprise business areas to ensure the legal function is efficient, coordinated and aligned with organisational priorities. As part of a diverse and inclusive Defence Legal community, you will contribute to the systems, processes and services that strengthen Defence's overall legal capability and support its mission to defend Australia and advance national security interests.

They will have the ability to manage competing priorities while displaying proficient judgement and have excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
Proven expertise in corporate financial and reporting processes, including understanding and adhering to relevant policy and legislation is highly desirable. The successful candidate will possess strong organisational skills and have the ability to adapt to various tasks, adopting a resourceful and innovative approach to solution-based outcomes.
They can work well in a team environment and can also work independently when the need arises. They will be an enthusiastic and motivated key contributor to the achievement of legal service delivery excellence within the Department of Defence.
