About the role

This is an exciting leadership opportunity for a motivated and forward-thinking professional to lead the maintenance and presentation of Council’s sportsgrounds & turf wickets across the municipality.

The Team Leader Sportsgrounds is responsible for overseeing a dedicated team of turf wicket curators, plant operators and contractors - coordinating turf maintenance, mowing, and renovation works across a wide range of sportsgrounds. Reporting to the Coordinator Active Parks, the role involves planning and delivering high-quality turf services, liaising with internal stakeholders, managing contractors, and supporting seasonal renovation and capital works programs.

This role sits within Council’s newly structured Active Parks team and plays a critical role in ensuring Greater Dandenong’s sportsgrounds are safe, healthy, and playable year-round.

About you

You’re an experienced turf management professional with a passion for sportsground presentation and turf quality. You enjoy leading teams, planning programs, and delivering quality outcomes that support community participation and active lifestyles.

With strong technical knowledge of turf maintenance and renovation practices, you’re confident coordinating staff, working with contractors, and engaging with sports clubs and internal stakeholders. You take pride in delivering fit-for-purpose playing surfaces and enjoy balancing service expectations, weather, and seasonal demand.

Key requirements

- Tertiary qualification in Turf Management
- Several years’ experience working in local government or a similar environment
- Experience in contract management
- Demonstrated experience supervising sportsground management functions
- Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of open space maintenance programs, with problem-solving skills and the capacity to inspire and support innovative thinking
- Knowledge and skills in contemporary management practices, staff management, performance management, staff development, change management and business excellence
- Highly effective interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication, listening, liaison, advocacy, facilitation, and excellent customer service delivery
- Demonstrated capacity to effectively manage time, establish priorities, and achieve business and team objectives under conflicting pressures
- Demonstrated intermediate to advanced PC literacy, including MS Office applications

You may be required to undertake practical testing, work preference profiling / psychometric testing, functional capacity assessment (physical) or aptitude testing.

The successful candidate will be asked to provide a transparent Working with Children Check and will be asked to consent to a national police check (and where relevant an international criminal history check), subject to spent conviction laws.
