About the Role
As a Cyber Security Specialist at Calexi, you will play a key role in delivering cyber capability into mission-critical environments. You will join Calexi as a full-time employee and be initially assigned to one of our Canberra-based Defence or government contracts. In future, you may be redeployed to other client programs as opportunities evolve providing variety, professional growth, and exposure to complex national-security projects.
This is a mid-to-senior-level position suited to professionals with strong technical, analytical, and stakeholder engagement skills who want to make a tangible contribution to Australia's cyber resilience. The successful candidate must be able to opperate independently.
Key Responsibilities
* Perform security assessments and configuration reviews of systems, applications, and networks against ISM and Essential Eight controls.
* Develop and implement hardening and remediation plans, ensuring identified vulnerabilities are tracked and resolved.
* Support secure-by-design reviews, providing input into architecture and system designs.
* Conduct SIEM monitoring and event triage, escalating incidents and assisting with containment and recovery.
* Maintain security documentation (risk registers, incident reports, vulnerability tracking, system security plans).
* Collaborate with project and operations teams to embed security controls throughout the lifecycle.
* Support audit and compliance reporting, including evidence gathering for DISP and ISO 27001 activities.
* Participate in continuous improvement, recommending enhancements to monitoring, logging, and response processes.
* Contribute to knowledge sharing and mentoring across the Calexi cyber capability.
Skills & Experience
* Extensive hands-on experience designing, deploying, and maintaining cybersecurity systems and capabilities (hardware and software).
* Practical knowledge of ISM Security Controls and their implementation within classified or secure environments.
* Familiarity with Defence cybersecurity frameworks, including A&A and DISP requirements.
* Strong understanding of Windows, Linux, and networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, VLANs, firewalls, routing).
* Working knowledge of virtualisation and storage technologies (KVM, VMware).
* Competence with scripting or programming (PowerShell, Python, Java) for automation or analysis.
* Understanding of threat modelling, vulnerability assessment, and incident response.
* Familiarity with integrating emerging technologies into secure infrastructure environments.
* Experience supporting Defence or government projects with security clearance.
* Proven ability to prepare and maintain security and technical documentation.
* Relevant tertiary or vocational qualifications in cybersecurity, systems, or network engineering.
* Certifications such as CompTIA CySA+, Splunk, GIAC, or equivalent.
* Strong understanding of the Australian Information Security Manual (ISM), Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF), and ISO 27001.
* Experience with SIEM platforms (Splunk, Elastic, Sentinel, etc.) and vulnerability management tools (Nessus, Qualys, OpenVAS).
* Ability to interpret and apply security frameworks to practical engineering outcomes.
* Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
Security & Eligibility Requirements
* Australian citizenship is mandatory (due to clearance & ITAR requirements).
* NV2 clearance preferred; NV1 applicants with strong experience will also be considered.
* Applicants within 12 months of separating from Defence should note that transition rules may restrict immediate engagement; eligibility will be assessed case-by-case.
