Do you love to dance? Become a 'Mover' with emotion21
emotion21 provides evidence‑based, innovative dance, fitness and wellness programs for people with Down syndrome and is seeking volunteer 'Movers'.
The volunteer "Mover" supports the teacher in the class and helps ensure each emotion21 participant is engaged, learning, and participating. Your role is to assist the teacher to ensure participants gain the benefits of the program, such as developing movement skills, experiencing psychological advantages, and growing social skills.
As a 'Mover', you act like an assistant coach, encouraging full participation, believing in participants' potential, and being a role model with contagious enthusiasm and positivity. The teacher may assign you different responsibilities such as behavior management, one‑on‑one support, or acting as a class role model.
You demonstrate the emotion21 core values of CARE, RESPECT, FUN and LEARN in all interactions.
Volunteer Duties
- Participate in all relevant induction and training programs and agree not to share or sell emotion21’s intellectual property.
- Wear the required uniform (black sports shoes, black pants, and emotion21 t‑shirt or a black t‑shirt at events). Hair must be tied back if long and no jewelry is allowed.
- Respect the rosters: communicate any changes to your commitment to the Volunteer Coordinator in a timely manner and arrange a swap if you cannot attend a shift.
- Arrive 15 minutes early to connect with the site manager, greet participants and families, and report to the teacher.
- Participate in pre‑class and debrief activities, assist with room set‑up, obtain an overview of the session, clarify expectations, and participate in the end‑of‑class debrief and pack‑down activities.
- Operate under the direction and supervision of nominated staff, movers, and teachers.
- Be a role model in attitude (having fun, caring, respecting, and learning); demonstrate the choreography, wear the proper uniform, and encourage compliance with the class rules for each age group.
- Support participants using errorless learning and help them learn new choreography from the start.
- Encourage participants to be independent and mindful, avoiding over‑assistance that can lead to learned helplessness.
- Support positive behavior by focusing on and rewarding positive behaviours.
- Modify communication style where needed (e.g., use visual aids, sign language, eye contact, allow time to respond, short/concise sentences) to suit the learning strengths of participants as directed by the teachers.
- Assist at community events and concerts when your schedule allows.
- Comply with all health and safety regulations (non‑smoking and drug/alcohol free).
- Ensure confidentiality in accordance with policy and professional standards.
