* They provide authoritative legal advice and assistance with regards to the development of new measures in primary legislation administered by the department or in legislative instruments.
* Collaborating closely with the Office of Parliamentary Counsel, they play a pivotal role in developing legislation that aligns with the department's objectives.
* Furthermore, they facilitate thorough constitutional risk assessments of new policy proposals to ensure alignment with established policies.
* By providing expert support and guidance, they assist policy and program areas of the department in the development and drafting of delegation and statutory appointment instruments.
* Closely collaborating with other Commonwealth Departments and relevant internal policy and program areas, they help ensure DVA legislation mirrors equivalent legislation in the provision of support, benefits and assistance that are beneficial to veterans and their families.
As a key member of the Legal & Audit Division, Legal Officers prepare, draft and review moderately complex legislative instruments and other legal documents. They effectively build and maintain strong client relationships with business areas while promoting the division as the department's trusted advisor. Continuously developing professional legal expertise through participation in development, training and study opportunities, they meet Continuing Legal Education requirements and other expectations.
