About Disability Advocacy Service (DAS)


Disability Advocacy Service (DAS) is a community-based organisation dedicated to advancing the rights, voices, and inclusion of people with disability across Central Australia and the Barkly region. We work from a peer-led, co-design approach where lived experience is at the centre of advocacy, reform, and service delivery. DAS empowers people with disability to self-advocate, influence change, and participate fully in community life.


Purpose of the Role


The Peer Project Officer plays a key role in supporting and delivering DAS projects that ensure people with disability shape reform and service design. The role will develop and facilitate peer-led initiatives, workshops, and groups that build skills, confidence, and leadership capacity.

Projects include:

* NT Disability Reforms Project – engaging people in system-wide reform.
* ILC Project – delivering inclusive, capacity-building initiatives.
* I Can Lead Project – developing leadership and advocacy skills.
* PATHS Development – creating pathways and tools for self-advocacy.
* Co-Design & Workshop Project – facilitating co-design workshops and supporting implementation.
* Peer Support Groups – planning, facilitating, and evaluating peer-led groups across Central Australia and the Barkly.


Key Responsibilities


Project Work

* Contribute to the design, delivery, and monitoring of project plans in line with funding requirements.
* Facilitate workshops that build participants' skills and confidence to self-advocate.
* Coordinate and document co-design meetings, workshops, and consultations.
* Support peer leaders to co-facilitate groups and develop leadership capacity.
* Develop accessible project resources, including Easy Read materials.
* Monitor project outcomes and prepare reports for funders and the DAS Board.

Peer Support & Inclusive Practices

* Deliver all projects through a co-design and peer-led model.
* Create safe, supportive spaces for people with disability to share experiences, build skills, and influence change.
* Support peer facilitators and inclusion workers in planning and delivering activities.
* Promote best practice in peer-led, inclusive facilitation across DAS.

Stakeholder Engagement

* Build networks with people with disability, families, community groups, NGOs, government agencies, and advocacy bodies.
* Represent and promote DAS's work and values in community and stakeholder forums.
* Amplify the voices of people with disability in policy and reform consultations.

Governance, Reporting & Administration

* Maintain accurate records of activities, engagement, and outcomes.
* Contribute to funding acquittals, evaluations, and Board reporting.
* Work in line with DAS policies, procedures, and reporting frameworks.
* Support continuous improvement through feedback and evaluation.

Workplace Health & Safety

* Take responsibility for personal health, safety, and wellbeing, and contribute to the safety of others.
* Identify and report risks in line with DAS risk management frameworks.
* Ensure safeguarding practices are upheld at all times.


Selection Criteria


Essential

* Lived experience of disability and/or experience working alongside people with disability in peer or advocacy contexts.
* Qualifications in disability, community development, social work, or a related field OR extensive relevant experience.
* Ability to facilitate groups, workshops, or training programs.
* Knowledge of the disability sector, NDIS, and current reform agendas.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build collaborative relationships.
* Experience in project delivery, planning, and evaluation.
* Ability to create Easy Read and accessible resources (or willingness to learn).
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* Strong organisational and time management skills.
* Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office and online platforms.
* Current NT driver's licence and willingness to travel, including to remote communities.
* Current (or willingness to obtain) Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card) and National Police Check.

Desirable

* Experience in peer-led models, co-design, and capacity-building projects.
* Understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal people with disability in remote NT communities.
* Experience in advocacy, systemic reform, or policy influence.
