The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.

Your Impact

As a valued member of the Care & Protection/Family Law Practice, you will provide paralegal and administrative support to strengthen the delivery of high-quality, culturally safe legal services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients. You will help solicitors advocate effectively and contribute to positive outcomes for the families and communities we serve, ensuring smooth day-to-day operations of the practice.

* Provide high-level paralegal and administrative support to solicitors, including research, drafting, and court preparation.
* Assist in client interviews, court appearances, and preparation of applications, affidavits, and other legal documents.
* Liaise with government agencies, courts, and community organisations to support clients and case management.
* Maintain accurate records, case files, and statistical data while ensuring confidentiality and compliance with ALS policies.
* Work collaboratively with the team to support smooth office operations and contribute to a positive, culturally safe environment.
* Uphold professional competence, ethical standards, and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural practices.

Your Story & Strengths

You are a skilled and motivated paralegal powerhouse who brings strong research, drafting, and administrative expertise to Care & Protection and Family Law matters. With a deep understanding of the cultural, social, and historical contexts shaping the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, you approach your work with respect, integrity, and cultural awareness. Key strengths include:

* Formal paralegal qualifications or currently undertaking a law degree.
* Understanding of the issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in care and protection and family law systems.
* Knowledge of relevant support and referral services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.
* Strong research, problem‐solving, and analytical skills.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing.
* Self‐motivated with strong administrative capability and proficiency in Microsoft Office and video‐conferencing tools.
