It collaborates with internal stakeholders to ensure Garvan’s research, corporate, and commercial activities align with its mission. The office provides pragmatic legal advice, manages risks responsibly, and ensures compliance with laws and policies. It also supports the Garvan Research Foundation (GRF) and Australian BioResources (ABR).THE OPPORTUNITYThe Senior Lawyer:Leads negotiations, reviews, and manages agreements related to Garvan’s research and intellectual property.Ensures staff stay updated on relevant laws and policies, interprets legal developments, and develops policies to maximize compliance.Provides legal support on corporate and commercial matters.Collaborates with divisions such as People and Culture, Grants, and Research Ethics & Governance to align agreements with strategic and legal obligations.Works with related entities (GRF and ABR) to manage risks associated with agreements.Salary: $150,000 + 11.5% super + salary packaging (Pro-rated at $120,000)Employment Type: Permanent part-time, 4 days a week (0.8 FTE / 30.4 hours per week)BENEFITSSalary packaging benefits for tax savings (max. $15,900 general expenses + $2,650 meals/accommodation)Ongoing training and development opportunitiesInternational research environmentFlexible work hours18 weeks paid parental leave for both parents, including superannuationAdditional leave options (cultural, conference, community service, study)Discounted health insuranceLifestyle discounts with community partnersKEY RESPONSIBILITIESLegal services - agreements and adviceNegotiate, prepare, and manage agreements for research, including collaboration, material transfer, data transfer, and service contracts.Manage agreements related to intellectual property rights and protections.Review funding and grant agreements.Negotiate and manage commercial contracts, including services, procurement, IT, property, and employment agreements.Handle complex IP, strategy, and technology transfer matters with external organizations.Advise internal stakeholders on contract rights and liabilities.Support the establishment of new research entities or centers.Assist with legal services for GRF, including sponsorship and fundraising agreements.Draft and negotiate IP transfer agreements for researchers.Oversee external contracting, including monitoring and amendments.Ensure legal compliance and monitor legislative changes impacting Garvan.POLICIES, SYSTEMS, AND PROCESSESDevelop and review legal templates, clauses, policies, and procedures.Improve contract management and organizational tools for efficiency.Coordinate approval processes for Garvan’s contracts.STAFF TRAINING AND MENTORINGMentor junior staff and supervise interns/students.Develop and deliver internal legal training programs.MANAGEMENT & REPORTINGAssist in preparing reports and advice for the Board and Executive Team.QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCEEssential:Bachelor of Laws with current practicing certificate from Law Society of NSW, with at least 8 years PQE.
